An environment conducive to learning and it s relation to school design are discussed. The burden to design such a school falls on the architect. Broad inroads of audio and visual teaching aids and vast changes in furniture and equipment influence some design aspects. Aesthetically pleasing surroundings featuring sound control, safety, durability and ease of maintenance--all at minimal costs--are in demand. These design criteria warrant analyses and special consideration. Topics elaborated on are--(1) acoustical planning, (2) design for safety, (3) design for durability, (4) design for maintenance, (5) exterior walls affect costs, (6) integral chalkboards, (7) design for comfort, (8) criteria for comfort, (9) criteria for design, (10) design considerations, (11) "Airson" acoustical ceiling system, (12) ceilings, (13) special systems, and (14) school design service.
