The Puerto Rican Community Development Project: A Proposal for a Self-Help Project to Develop the Community by Strengthening the Family, Opening Opportunities for Youth and Making Full Use of Education.
Puerto Rican Forum, Inc., New York, NY.
A two-pronged proposal for a project to develop the New York City Puerto Rican community is presented. In the research phase a comprehensive social profile of the community will be prepared to indicate Puerto Rican attitudes toward social institutions, services, organizations, and facilities. The community's social structure, socioeconomic status, leadership, and values also will be studied. In another activity a register of existing Puerto Rican organizations will be prepared and related research on this ethnic group will be analyzed. The attitudes of non-Puerto Ricans toward this group also will be studied. Methodology for this 2-year study will involve constructing interview schedules in both Spanish and English, selecting four different samples of both adolescent and adult Puerto Ricans, and surveying a random sample of non-Puerto Ricans. In the action phase programs will be developed to raise family income and youth educational levels and to strengthen family life and Puerto Rican cultural institutions and organizations. (NH)
