This report summarizes the results of a fourteen-month study to (1) examine the feasibility of establishing a book processing center to serve the nine state-supported college and university libraries in Colorado and (2) conduct a simulation study of the proposed Center. The report covers: background, operational characteri tics of participating libraries, cost analysis, business office procedures, proposed operating specifications for the book processing center, approval plan utilization, a generalized stochastic model for simulating the operation of a book processing center, and results of a library user attitude survey. It is concluded that a centralized book processing center is feasible, with benefit for participating academic institutions in the cost savings, personnel specialization, and library automation. Recommendations emphasize establishment of a processing charge, processing both English language and foreign language materials, an automated bookkeeping system, automated processing procedures, development of current awareness bibliographies, and a central depository of standard times for performing technical services activities to be established by the A.L.A. Resources and Technical Services Division. Appendixes include a 68 item bibliography, detailed numerical data from the study, and the questionnaires and research tools used. (JB)
