AN EXPLORATORY STUDY WAS MADE OF THE INFLUENCE OF HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING DESIGN UPON THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY AT STUDENT INFORMAL INTERACTIONS, AND THE NATURE AND CONTENT OF SUCH INTERACTIONS. THREE HIGH SCHOOLS WERE STUDIED, AND QUESTIONNAIRES AND INTERVIEWS WERE USED WITH THE 1631 STUDENTS IN THE TOP TWO GRADES. CONCEPTS WHICH WERE IDENTIFIED INCLUDED--(1) SYMBOLIC OWNERSHIP OF SPACES, (2) PSYCHOLOGICAL CENTERS, (3) STUDENT SOCIAL SCHEDULES, (4) MIX, AND (5) COHESIVE VERSUS ISOLATING BUILDINGS. CENTRAL OR COHESIVE BUILDING LAYOUTS PRODUCED LARGER NON-ACADEMIC GROUP DISCUSSIONS, WHILE EXTENDED OR ISOLATING LAYOUTS RESULTED IN SMALLER GROUPS, AND MORE ACADEMIC DISCUSSION. (MM)
