BECAUSE CHILDREN OFTEN CONCENTRATE ONLY ON RHYME AND RHYTHM WHEN WRITING POETRY, AN EIGHTH-GRADE CLASS WAS INTRODUCED TO THE USE OF SPECIFIC WORDS, SOUNDS, IMAGERY, AND CONTENT. THE STUDENTS READ VARIOUS MODERN POETS AND TOOK A "FIELD TRIP OF THE SENSES," VISITING ZOOS AND MUSEUMS TO FIND SUBJECTS FOR POEMS. WRITING POEMS MODELED AFTER THE JAPANESE HAIKU WAS ESPECIALLY HELPFUL TO THEM BECAUSE THIS VERSE FORM EMPHASIZES PURPOSE, RHYTHM, AND IMAGERY. IN ADDITION, THE STUDENTS ILLUSTRATED THEIR POEMS AND PRACTICED COINING WORDS AFTER THE EXAMPLE OF ALASTAIR REID'S BOOK, "OUNCE DICE TRICE." HOWEVER, THROUGH ALL THESE EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS STILL HAD TO BE REMINDED OF THE NEED FOR UNITY AND PURPOSE IN THEIR WRITING.
