ATTITUDE CHANGE OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.

THIS STUDY MEASURES THE IMPACT OF CERTAIN FINANCIAL EDUCATION MATERIALS ON THE ATTITUDES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARD FINANCE AS IT RELATES TO THEM PERSONALLY AND TRIES TO DETERMINE IF ATTITUDE CHANGE IS FEASIBLE IN 15 DAYS. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO EXPLAIN REASONS FOR ANY CHANGES IN ATTITUDES EXPRESSED BY STUDENTS BY RELATING THE CHANGE TO THREE DIFFERENT STIMULUS SITUATIONS--STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS, TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS, AND STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS. DATA FOR STUDENT AND TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS WERE OBTAINED FROM PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRES OR SCHOOL RECORDS. PORTIONS OF THE CONSUMER INFORMATION TEST AND THE SURVEY OF STUDENT OPINION TOWARD PERSONAL FINANCE QUESTIONNAIRE WERE USED TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF THE TEACHING UNIT. EIGHT TEACHERS IN CLASSES OF BASIC BUSINESS, BOOKKEEPING, CONSUMER ECONOMICS, HOME ECONOMICS, ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, AND TYPEWRITING PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY. RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATE THAT SOME CHANGE IN STUDENT ATTITUDE MAY APPEAR REGARDLESS OF THE SCHOOL CLIMATE OR TEACHER IF THE STUDENT IS EXPOSED TO INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO FACILITATE ATTITUDE CHANGE. THIS APPEARS TO BE PARTICULARLY TRUE WHEN THE MATERIALS DEAL WITH SUBJECT MATTER THAT IS RELATIVELY NEW TO THE STUDENT.
