IT IS THE AUTHOR'S PURPOSE IN THIS BOOKLET TO HELP TEACHERS AND CURRICULUM SPECIALISTS UNDERSTAND WHY LINGUISTICS IS SO IMPORTANT AND TO UNDERSTAND ITS APPLICATIONS IN THE CLASSROOM. IN A CHAPTER ON "LINGUISTICS AND CLASSROOM PRACTICES" HE DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF LINGUISTICS IN READING INSTRUCTION, LITERATURE, SPELLING, COMPOSITION AND HANDWRITING, AND GRAMMAR AND USAGE. ANOTHER CHAPTER REVIEWS LINGUISTIC RESEARCH CONCERNED WITH THESE TOPICS AND REFERS THE READER TO SPECIFIC PUBLICATIONS FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. A SHORT FINAL CHAPTER INCLUDES CONJECTURES ABOUT FUTURE TRENDS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS INSTRUCTION IN THE 1970'S.
