THE FIRST OF THE THREE REPORTS ON TEACHING LOADS, A BRIEF STATISTICAL REPORT OF FINDINGS FROM THOMAS WILCOX'S NATIONAL SURVEY OF UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN ENGLISH, IS ARRANGED ACCORDING TO GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION, SIZE OF INSTITUTION, AND KIND OF INSTITUTION. NATIONAL PERCENTAGES AS WELL AS OTHER FACTORS RELATING TO GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND REDUCED TEACHING LOADS ARE SUMMARIZED. IN THE SECOND REPORT, "TEACHING LOADS--AND OTHER MYTHS," WILLIAM BUCKLER DISCUSSES THE RELATIONSHIP OF TEACHING LOADS TO BROAD INSTITUTIONAL GOALS, THE "CLIMATE" OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENTS, AND THE DYNAMICS OF INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE. FINALLY, DUDLEY BAILEY, IN "FACULTY TEACHING LOADS--THE STATE UNIVERSITY," DISCUSSES PROBLEMS AND METHODS OF DEFINING FACULTY LOADS, ESPECIALLY IN TERMS OF INCREASED ENROLLMENTS AND FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE COURSES. THE PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED IF WAYS ARE FOUND TO REDUCE THE RATIO OF STUDENTS TO TEACHER AND YET INCREASE THE RATIO OF CREDIT HOURS TO THE TEACHER.
