GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPARATION OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH IN BOTH THE SECONDARY AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WERE FORMULATED FROM THE ENGLISH TEACHER PREPARATION STUDY, CONDUCTED JOINTLY BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE DIRECTORS OF TEACHER EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION, THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH, AND THE MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION. NOT INTENDED AS RULES FOR CERTIFICATION, THE GUIDELINES ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY AND EMPHASIZE THE TEACHER COMPETENCE THAT SHOULD BE DEVELOPED BY A SATISFACTORY PROGRAM IN ENGLISH TEACHER PREPARATION. THIS PREPARATION SHOULD INCLUDE (1) A BALANCED STUDY OF LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND COMPOSITION ABOVE THE LEVEL OF FRESHMAN ENGLISH, (2) SUPERVISED ENGLISH TEACHING AND INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH METHODS, INCLUDING THE TEACHING OF READING, AND (3) A FIFTH YEAR OF STUDY, LARGELY IN ENGLISH AND ENGLISH EDUCATION COURSES. THE UNDERGRADUATE PREPARATION OF THE SECONDARY TEACHER SHOULD CONSTITUTE A MAJOR IN ENGLISH. IN ADDITION, THE TEACHER OF ENGLISH ON ANY LEVEL SHOULD HAVE (1) PERSONAL QUALITIES WHICH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO HIS SUCCESS AS A CLASSROOM TEACHER, (2) A BROAD BACKGROUND IN THE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES, (3) SKILL IN LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING, AND WRITING, AND (4) AN UNDERSTANDING OF A WIDE BODY OF LITERATURE, OF THE NATURE OF LANGUAGE AND RHETORIC, AND OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT TO THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH.
