THE 1ST YEAR OF OPERATION OF THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER FOR LEARNING AND RE-EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN WAS REVIEWED. BASIC RESEARCH IN CONCEPT LEARNING WAS CONDUCTED BY MEANS OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS AND COMPUTER SIMULATION. CONCEPT LEARNING IN THE SUBJECT AREAS OF MATHEMATICS, ENGLISH COMPOSITION, SCIENCE, SPEECH, AND POLITICAL SCIENCE WAS INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF MODEL LESSONS AND FIELD TESTING. COORDINATED PROJECTS WERE BEGUN IN THE FIELDS OF THE CULTURALLY DISADVANTAGED, ADULT RE-EDUCATION, SOCIAL VARIABLES IN LEARNING, INSTRUCTIONAL TELEVISION, AND METHODOLOGY. NEW PROJECTS AND PLANS TO BE ADDED TO THE RESEARCH PROGRAM INCLUDE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS ON PROBLEM SOLVING AND PROJECT "MODELS" (MAXIMIZING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTATION IN LEARNING IN THE SCHOOLS). PROJECT "MODELS" WAS DEVELOPED TO FORMULATE SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH PROBLEMS, TO ESTABLISH RESEARCH AND INSTRUCTIONAL UNITS WITHIN PILOT SCHOOLS OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM TO STUDY AND MODIFY SCHOOL OPERATIONAL STRUCTURES, AND TO STUDY THE CHANGE PROCESSES WHEREBY SCHOOLS INTRODUCE INNOVATIONS AND MAKE ADAPTATIONS.
