THE AUTHOR'S POSITION WAS THAT, BECAUSE PEOPLE OFTEN DIFFER IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MEANING OF WORDS, LINGUISTS MUST WORK WITH PSYCHOLOGISTS, NEUROLOGISTS, AND OTHERS TO GUIDE LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF HOW A LANGUAGE WORKS AND HOW BEST TO COMMUNICATE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO THEIR STUDENTS. WHILE DENOTATIVE MEANING REFERS PRIMARILY TO VISUAL AND FACTUAL EFFECTS, CONNOTATIVE MEANING IS LINKED TO EMOTION, MAKING IT IMPERATIVE FOR THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER TO BE STEEPED IN THE SOCIAL-CULTURAL ATMOSPHERE OF THE COUNTRY WHOSE LANGUAGE HE IS TEACHING IN ORDER TO CREATE IN HIS STUDENTS AN AWARENESS OF VERBAL CONTEXT SIMILAR TO THAT OF NATIVES OF THE FOREIGN COUNTRY.
