A STUDY WAS MADE TO SEE WHETHER EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENTS INVOLVING REDUCED WORK LOADS AND INTENSIVE INSERVICE INSTRUCTION WOULD AFFECT THE PERFORMANCES AND ATTITUDES OF BEGINNING TEACHERS. IT WAS HOPED THAT THE STUDY DATA WOULD SHOW TO WHAT EXTENT AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR CAREER TEACHERS WOULD BE JUSTIFIED. THE EXPERIENCE IN THIS STUDY WITH THE APPRAISAL TECHNIQUES USED TO EVALUATE BEGINNING TEACHERS' PERFORMANCES SUGGESTS THAT EXPERIENCED TEACHERS CAN BE TRAINED TO USE AN OBSERVATION CHECKLIST AND ARRIVE AT A FAIR DEGREE OF AGREEMENT WITH OTHER SUCH TRAINED OBSERVERS.
