THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIA IN THE MODIFICATION OF CHILDREN'S CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR AND SELF CONCEPTS.

THE ADJUSTMENT OF CHILDREN AS MANIFESTED IN THEIR SELF-CONCEPTS AND THEIR CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR WAS INVESTIGATED. IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT THE OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO OBSERVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THEMSELVES IN SCHOOL WITHIN A POSITIVE FRAME OF REFERENCE WOULD ENABLE THEM (1) TO DEVELOP A MORE POSITIVE SELF-CONCEPT, (2) TO DEVELOP A MORE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR, AND (3) TO MORE RAPIDLY CORRECT ANTISOCIAL OR UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR, PERSONALITY STRUCTURE, AND SELF-CONCEPT. EACH MEMBER OF THE EXPERIMENTAL CLASS WAS SHOWN A NUMBER OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIMSELF TAKEN IN A NORMAL SCHOOL SITUATION. AS THE STUDENT VIEWED THESE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE PRESENCE OF AN INVESTIGATOR EVERY 5 TO 16 DAYS, THE INVESTIGATOR MADE FAVORABLE COMMENTS ABOUT THE STUDENTS AS REFLECTED BY THE PHOTOGRAPH. IN THE JUDGEMENT OF THE INVESTIGATORS, THE IMPACT OF THE PICTURES PRODUCED IMPORTANT CHANGES OF PERSONALITY AND SELF-CONCEPT IN SOME SUBJECTS. HOWEVER, THE AVAILABLE TESTS DID NOT PROVIDE SENSITIVE OR ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE CHANGES PRODUCED, AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGES WERE NOT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED. (AL)
