Peer reviewedSmith, Alan D. – College and University, 1982
The use of computer graphics techniques in a study of attrition at the University of Akron is outlined to illustrate potential applications. The techniques produce information that is more readily interpreted than the usual data tables. Specific software information and illustrations are included. (MSE)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Computer Programs, Dropout Research, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWoods, Jeanine – English Journal, 1983
Explains how Sir Joshua Reynolds' paintings and William Blake's etchings enriched the study of Blake's "The Chimney Sweeper" in a seventh-grade class. (JL)
Descriptors: Creative Teaching, English Instruction, Grade 7, Integrated Activities
Peer reviewedRatliffe, Tom – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 1982
Dittoed worksheets, posters, and charts are the basis for helping elementary school physical education students understand movement concepts. Written or pictured exercises designed by the teacher reinforce students' learning of physical skills and identify areas of confusion. (PP)
Descriptors: Charts, Concept Teaching, Elementary Education, Language Skills
Szabo, Michael; And Others – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1981
Investigates the role of visuals in the instructional and evaluation phases of a high school biology unit on the human heart. Results indicate that the instructional strategy of implementing visualization in both the presentation and evaluation phases is a viable instructional variable. Forty-four references are listed. (Author/MER)
Descriptors: Biology, Evaluation Methods, Information Processing, Media Selection
Peer reviewedHeck, Shirley F. – Kappa Delta Pi Record, 1979
Presented are two visual aids, the Lesson Plan Tree and the Interdisciplinary Planning Wheel, which can serve as a framework and reference for student and teacher cooperative planning of an interdisciplinary studies unit. Both planning aids are illustrated with sample learning activities on pioneer life in Ohio. (SJL)
Descriptors: Curriculum Development, Integrated Activities, Interdisciplinary Approach, Intermediate Grades
Peer reviewedKartzmark, Elinor M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Describes construction of two inexpensive three-dimensional models (tetrahedrons) using glass tubing and colored plastic sheeting. Diagrams show how these models are used in explaining how a point is plotted in a four-component system and how the composition of a point is deduced from its position in the model. (CS)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Earth Science, Geometric Concepts
Peer reviewedWinn, William – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Examines the effectiveness of block-word diagrams in science instruction for ninth graders using directed graphs that express content structure as key concepts joined by arrows. Results include the finding that the effect of text-plus-diagram treatment compared to text-only treatment was different for learners of different ability. (CS)
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Diagrams, Educational Research
Peer reviewedWalz, Joel Chandler – Foreign Language Annals, 1979
Discusses pedagogical and technical aspects of making films of native speakers of French conversing with the aid of gestures. (AM)
Descriptors: Body Language, Cultural Differences, French, Instructional Films
Peer reviewedRussell, Arlene A.; Mitchell, Bernie L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Describes the use of cassette tape recordings in preparing freshman chemistry students for experiments in laboratories. The tapes are said to have decreased student anxiety in the laboratory and increased laboratory skills. (SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedHolliday, William G.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Describes a study in which tenth-grade biology students who were low verbal performers scored significantly higher on achievement tests when provided with picture-word diagrams of biological concepts than when provided with block-word diagrams. Students and teachers also preferred picture-word diagrams as indicated by a questionnaire. (MLH)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Biology, Educational Research, Flow Charts
Peer reviewedMyers, Sharon L.; Cronin, Michael W. – Journal of Computing in Higher Education, 1997
A study investigated effects of visuals use in interactive multimedia instruction in a college-level unit on listening skills in communication. Subjects (n=140 students) were randomly assigned to two treatment groups (use of visuals/no use of visuals). Results indicate no significant difference between groups on cognitive or listening tests…

Peer reviewedVerdi, Michael P.; Johnson, Janet T.; Stock, William A.; Kulhavy, Raymond W.; Whitman-Ahern, Polly – Journal of Experimental Education, 1997
In two experiments, students were shown a visual display and then a related text passage, or vice versa, to determine which condition improved recall. Results with 100 undergraduates and 112 middle school students supported the expected outcome of improved recall when the display preceded the text. (SLD)
