Based on data analysis from recent national surveys, found that (1) the payoff in job satisfaction from education is modest, and (2) most of that payoff is through earnings, occupational prestige, and, for men, job autonomy and authority. In a sample of 4,035 men and women from a 1963 high school cohort, sex differences in role patterning were found in the timing, ordering, and continuity of educational, occupational, marital, and procreational roles.
