Fischbein, Efraim – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1993
The main thesis of the paper is that geometry deals with mental entities (the so-called geometrical figures) which possess simultaneously conceptual and figural characters. The paper analyzes the internal tensions which may arise in figural concepts because of their double nature, developmental aspects, and didactical implications. (Author/MDH)

Izen, Stanley P. – Mathematics Teacher, 1998
Discusses the vital place of proofs in geometry classes. Argues that, although inductive geometry with computer software certainly makes theorems come alive, proofs lead to insight and understanding that allow students to extend the concepts that they see in examples. Presents a theorem, its proof, and a computer exercise. (ASK)

Battista, Michael T. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1999
Presents an overview of the geometry findings of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and ways to use problems from the study to assess students' understanding of geometry. (ASK)

Widmer, Connie; Sheffield, Linda – Learning & Leading with Technology, 1998
U.S. mathematics education has been criticized for being too broad. This article examines ways middle school students use simple problems and situations to foster a deeper understanding of underlying concepts. Presents a sample area and perimeter problem, describes extending the problem using tiles to determine minimum perimeter, and discusses…

Hoyt, Jeff E.; Sorensen, Colleen T. – Journal of Developmental Education, 2001
Reports that students entering an urban state college still had high remedial placement rates even though they successfully completed college preparatory math and English courses in high school. Discusses the "chain of blame" and concerns regarding the rigor of high school programs. (Contains 45 references.) (AUTH/NB)

Coffland, David A.; Strickland, Albert W. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 2004
This survey sought to identify variables related to teacher use of technology in secondary level geometry classrooms in southeastern Idaho. The primary variables examined in the study were teacher technology awareness, teacher attitude toward technology, teacher technology training, and teacher computer use for instruction. This study also tested…

Morris, Barbara H. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2004
This article describes a geometry project that used the beauty of stained-glass-window designs to teach middle school students about geometric figures and concepts. Three honors prealgebra teachers and a middle school mathematics gifted intervention specialist created a geometry project that covered the curriculum and also assessed students'…

Joram, Elana; Oleson, Vicki – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2004
This article describes a unit of instruction designed to promote a conceptual understanding of area in sixth-grade students. Students used benchmarks to estimate the areas of real houses and calculated the areas of houses based on building plans. (Contains 7 figures.)

Barrett, Jeffrey E.; Clements, Douglas H.; Klanderman, David; Pennisi, Sarah-Jean; Polaki, Mokaeane V. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2006
This article examines students' development of levels of understanding for measurement by describing the coordination of geometric reasoning with measurement and numerical strategies. In analyzing the reasoning and argumentation of 38 Grade 2 through Grade 10 students on linear measure tasks, we found support for the application and elaboration of…

Rickard, Laura N.; Wilson, Colette – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2006
"Lettuce Learn Math" is an interdisciplinary program that has effectively linked a small-scale agricultural production system to a sixth-grade mathematics and science curriculum. The mathematical concepts and skills, including measurement and geometry, taught in this project met and often exceeded the standards set by New York state for…

Pech, Pavel – International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, 2005
Computer algebra methods based on results of commutative algebra like Groebner bases of ideals and elimination of variables make it possible to solve complex, elementary and non elementary problems of geometry, which are difficult to solve using a classical approach. Computer algebra methods permit the proof of geometric theorems, automatic…

Van Dooren, Wim; De Bock, Dirk.; Hessels, An; Janssens, Dirk; Verschaffel, Lieven – Learning and Instruction, 2004
Already at a very young age, children experience the wide applicability and intrinsic simplicity of linear/proportional relations. In primary and secondary school mathematics education, moreover, extensive attention is paid to this type of relations. In the long run, students develop the misbelief that each relation can be quantified as…

Stein, Martin; Burchartz, Birgit – Mathematical Thinking & Learning: An International Journal, 2006
The Invisible Wall Project analyzes problem-solving processes of children in Grades 3 and 4 and Grades 8 and 9. The central idea of the research is to use sets of tasks that are all unsolvable, which means they have a goal that cannot be reached. The unsolvability, however, is of a kind that can be understood even by younger children. In our case,…

Moses-Snipes, Pamela R. – Negro Educational Review, The, 2005
The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent studying topics in a cultural context affected African American students' achievement. Mathematics achievement was measured by a pre-assessment and post-assessment. The literature addresses the fact that all students can benefit from learning about culture and mathematics. Several…

Portnoy, Neil; Grundmeier, Todd A.; Graham, Karen J. – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 2006
This research explored students' views of geometric objects through the implementation of a curriculum module that allowed them to explore the relationships between transformational geometry and linear algebra. The majority of the students were middle and secondary mathematics education majors enrolled in a one-semester geometry course that is…
