Pongsophon, Pongprapan; Yutakom, Naruemon; Boujaoude, Saouma B. – Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching, 2010
This project aims to investigate how process drama promotes scientific literacy in the context of global warming. Thirty-one lower (n = 24) and upper (n = 7) secondary students of one secondary school in Bangkok, Thailand participated in a seven-day workshop which process drama strategy was implemented. In the workshop, the students were actively…

Heine, Angela; Thaler, Verena; Tamm, Sascha; Hawelka, Stefan; Schneider, Michael; Torbeyns, Joke; De Smedt, Bert; Verschaffel, Lieven; Stern, Elsbeth; Jacobs, Arthur M. – Infant and Child Development, 2010
To date, a number of studies have demonstrated the existence of mismatches between children's "implicit" and "explicit" knowledge at certain points in development that become manifest by their gestures and gaze orientation in different problem solving contexts. Stimulated by this research, we used eye movement measurement to…

Mulder, Yvonne G.; Lazonder, Ard W.; de Jong, Ton – International Journal of Science Education, 2010
Inquiry learning environments increasingly incorporate modelling facilities for students to articulate their research hypotheses and (acquired) domain knowledge. This study compared performance success and scientific reasoning of university students with high prior knowledge (n = 11), students from senior high-school (n = 10), and junior…

Crosby, Danielle A.; Dowsett, Chantelle J.; Gennetian, Lisa A.; Huston, Aletha C. – Developmental Psychology, 2010
We apply instrumental variables (IV) techniques to a pooled data set of employment-focused experiments to examine the relation between type of preschool childcare and subsequent externalizing problem behavior for a large sample of low-income children. To assess the potential usefulness of this approach for addressing biases that can confound…

Chang, Ling-Chian; Lee, Greg C. – Computers & Education, 2010
Project-based learning (PBL) is a highly effective means of motivating students to learn independently. However, training or encouraging teachers to practice PBL in their classrooms is challenging, especially if the educational system does not accommodate creative teaching practices. In particular, in a test-driven educational system, time…

Feilzer, Martina Yvonne – Journal of Mixed Methods Research, 2010
This article explores the practical relevance of pragmatism as a research paradigm through the example of a piece of pragmatic research that not only used both quantitative and qualitative research methods but also exploited the inherent duality of the data analyzed. Thus, the article aims to make the case that pragmatism as a research paradigm…

Lorch, Robert F., Jr.; Lorch, Elizabeth P.; Calderhead, William J.; Dunlap, Emily E.; Hodell, Emily C.; Freer, Benjamin Dunham – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2010
Students (n = 797) from 36 4th-grade classrooms were taught the control of variables strategy for designing experiments. In the instruct condition, classes were taught in an interactive lecture format. In the manipulate condition, students worked in groups to design and run experiments to determine the effects of four variables. In the both…

Young, Jocelyn; Hardy, Kevin – Science Scope, 2007
In this article, the authors discuss a unique and challenging laboratory exercise called, the paint-stir-stick submarine, that keeps the students enthralled. The paint-stir-stick submarine fits beautifully with the National Science Education Standards Physical Science Content Standard B, and with the California state science standards for physical…

Gelderman, K.; L. Lee; Donne, S. W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
An experiment is suitable for fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students in which the nature of the semiconductor materials through determination of flat-band potential using the Mott-Schottky equation is explored. The experiment confirms the soundness of the technique.

Bentley, Anne K.; Weaver, Gabriela C.; Russell, Cianan B.; Fornes, William L.; Choi, Kyoung-Shin; Shih, Susan M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A simple and cost-effective experiment for the development and characterization of semiconductors using Uv-vis spectroscopy is described. The study shows that the optical properties of ZnO films can be easily modified by forming Zn[subscript 1-x] Co[subscript x]O solid solutions via spray pyrolysis.

Tribe, Lorena; Kostka, Kim – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Students developing their labs lead them to enhance the laboratory experience. This benefits the students as they learn more about the experiments and they get benefit by peers led labs through a more fluid discussion.

Noh, Soo Rim – ProQuest LLC, 2009
Understanding a narrative situation depends on keeping track of multiple characters that enter and exit dynamically as the plot unfolds. Because there has been no systematic investigation of age differences in the ability to manage multiple characters during narrative comprehension, this project was designed to examine those differences in this…

Ho, Shuyuan Mary – ProQuest LLC, 2009
This study examines perceptions of human "trustworthiness" as a key component in countering insider threats. The term "insider threat" refers to situations where a critical member of an organization behaves against the interests of the organization, in an illegal and/or unethical manner. Cepeda, Nicholas J.; Coburn, Noriko; Rohrer, Doug; Wixted, John T.; Mozer, Michael C,; Pashler, Harold – Online Submission, 2009
More than a century of research shows that increasing the gap between study episodes using the same material can enhance retention, yet little is known about how this so-called distributed practice effect unfolds over nontrivial periods. In two three-session laboratory studies, we examined the effects of gap on retention of foreign vocabulary,…

Harkema, Jennifer; Jadrich, James; Bruxvoort, Crystal – Science Teacher, 2009
Students should understand both the science and the engineering models of experimentation. Since students are often predisposed to using the engineering model, teachers must intentionally design activities that better reflect the nature of scientific experimentation. In this article, the authors recommend some guidelines that can be used when…
