Although modern grammatical research gathers the various functions of the adjective under "indicator of kind," school practice still separates adjective and adverb. Dialogue, unlike monologue, contains large amounts of abbreviated speech, some of it conscious economy, some accidental, some psychologically motivated, and some systematic elimination of syntactically necessary elements (ellipsis). V-Te-I and V-Te-Ar are Japanese verb forms used to express "overlapping," or the relationships of expressions in time. In English these have the form Be-V-Ing. Progressive, concomitant, and stative overlapping are discussed with references to their meanings and to the type of verb each takes. (SC)
