The national monitoring system being developed by the Assessment of Performance Unit (APU) may prove a useful assessment framework for individual schools, providing developmental data for program comparisons and student movement between schools. Males and females who withdrew from college during their freshman year were divided into withdrawers vs continuers, transfers vs nontransfers, and withdrew passing vs withdrew failing. Black students that were grouped for English ability by their standardized test scores translated a standard English text into black dialect. Analytical data show group differences in dialect facility that correlate to standard English ability, suggesting that language development affects both dialect performance and standard English learning.
