Schooler, Carmi; Silverman, Julian – J Abnorm Psychol, 1969
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Patients, Perception, Responses
Peer reviewedChen, L. – Science, 1982
Three experiments on tachistoscopic perception of visual stimuli demonstrate that the visual system is sensitive to global topological properties. The results indicate that extraction of global topological properties is a basic factor in perceptual organization. (Author)
Descriptors: Classification, Tachistoscopes, Visual Discrimination, Visual Perception
Peer reviewedFurman, Wyndol; Bierman, Karen L. – Child Development, 1983
An open-ended interview, a picture-recognition task, and a forced-choice rating task were administered to 64 four- to seven-year-old boys and girls to assess development of conceptions of friendship. Findings suggested that as children grow older they place increasing emphasis on affectively based friendship characteristics. (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Friendship, Perception, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedRose, Susan A.; And Others – Child Development, 1983
In three studies, 12-month-old infants were familiarized either tactually or visually with objects and were then tested for visual recognition memory using either (1) the familiar and a novel object, (2) colored pictures of the objects, or (3) outline drawings of the objects. (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Infants, Memory, Recognition (Psychology), Tactual Perception
Peer reviewedAntel, Sue Ellen; Keating, Daniel P. – Child Development, 1983
Examines the ability of infants ranging in age from 21 to 44 hours old to discriminate among visual stimulus arrays. Infants were able to discriminate between small sets of dots (two to three dots) but not between larger sets (four to six). (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Infants, Neonates, Number Concepts
Peer reviewedNelson, Charles A.; Horowitz, Frances Degen – Child Development, 1983
Holograms of faces were used to study two- and five-month-old infants' discriminations of changes in facial expression and pose when the stimulus was seen to move or to remain stationary. While no evidence was found suggesting that infants preferred the moving face, evidence indicated that motion contrasts facilitate face recognition. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Facial Expressions, Holography, Infants
Peer reviewedBiaggio, Mary Kay; Supplee, Katherine A. – Journal of Psychology, 1983
Examines the validity of three dimensions of aesthetic perception: hedonic value, arousal, and uncertainty. Hedonic interest and arousal factors were found to differ from factors previously reported, while the uncertainty factor paralleled that previously reported. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Aesthetic Values, Factor Analysis, Perception, Undergraduate Students
Peer reviewedBrandes, Pauline J.; Ehinger, Diane M. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1981
Two groups of 15 children (7 to 9 years old) were compared on auditory perceptual skills and academic achievement. Ss with conductive loss (CL) had histories of middle ear pathology. Overall performance of the CL Ss was significantly lower than a normal control group's, with specific deficiencies in auditory perceptual areas. (CL)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Auditory Perception, Hearing Impairments, Primary Education
Peer reviewedLounsbury, Mary L.; Bates, John E. – Child Development, 1982
The meaning of mothers' perceptions of their infants' temperamental "difficultness" was explored in three ways. Subjective ratings were elicited from mothers who listened to the cries of four- to six-month-old infants who were not their own. Acoustic properties of the cries of the infants were measured and effects of a variety of…

Peer reviewedKrumhansl, Carol L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
This study investigated the perceived harmonic relationships between the chords that belong to three closely related musical keys. Many aspects of the results have direct correlates in music theory and may help to uncover basic psychological principles that govern the organization of pitch relationships underlying both musical composition and…
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, Experimental Psychology, Music, Music Theory
Lockavitch, Joseph F., Jr. – Academic Therapy, 1983
Activities to help children develop the concept of right-left awareness are presented. Activities touch on lateral awareness (distinguishing between their right and left sides and labeling them) and directionality (using the language of left and right according to someone else's orientation). (CL)
Descriptors: Kinesthetic Perception, Lateral Dominance, Learning Disabilities, Psychomotor Skills
Peer reviewedFrith, Greg H.; Edwards, Raleigh – Journal for Special Educators, 1982
The authors discuss the composition of local special education advisory committees and the dynamics that affect their performance. (SB)
Descriptors: Advisory Committees, Disabilities, Elementary Secondary Education, Role Perception
Peer reviewedTrailor, Colette B. – Exceptional Children, 1982
Forty child study teams were observed and verbal behaviors of classroom teachers in those teams were analyzed. Teachers in an experimental program stressing role clarification spoke significantly more than any other participants. Parents were most frequently addressed by other team members. (CL)
Descriptors: Disabilities, Interprofessional Relationship, Role Perception, Teacher Role
Peer reviewedWeingarten, Merri; Anisfeld, Moshe – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Children 6- to 7- and 9- to 10-years-old listened to pairs of words presented dichotically to the left and right ear either simultaneously or in immediate succession. Results indicated that pragmatic, serial relations dominate younger children's semantic organization, whereas logical, hierarchical relations dominate older children's semantic…
