The Autopoiesis of Ballet. How the Classical Dance Education System Affects the Lack of Female Ballet Leaders in Poland
Research in Dance Education, v26 n1 p123-142 2025
Ballet, often perceived as a feminised art, exudes its magic through the predominantly female performers who bring its enchanting narratives to life. Despite this, the leadership landscape within the ballet world does not mirror the prevalence of women on stage. This article delves into the intricacies of the traditional career trajectory in ballet within the Polish context, tracing the journey from school to theatre, pedagogical studies, and often back to school, as teachers. By examining power relations, entrenched practices, and prevailing beliefs within the ballet industry, the article sheds light on the mechanisms that contribute to the formation of a self-perpetuating autopoiesis loop. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research reveals a glaring lack of female leadership in ballet, hindering women's progression as choreographers. This, in turn, perpetuates a significant void of female perspectives within ballet narratives, thereby shaping a non-feminised ballet heritage which in turn creates a certain perspective within ballet education. The article delves into various cultural factors influencing the socio-economic landscape of ballet labour market in Poland. It seeks to unravel the complex web of factors contributing to the gender disparity. In conclusion, the article calls for transformative measures to reshape the autopoiesis loop, creating a more empowering environment for women in Polish ballet.
