Raju, Nambury S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1977
A rederivation of Lord's formula for estimating variance in multiple matrix sampling is presented as well as the ways Cronbach's coefficient alpha and the Spearman-Brown prophecy formula are related in this context. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Comparative Analysis, Item Sampling, Mathematical Models

Davison, Mark L. – Psychometrika, 1977
A model is presented which allows for the prediction of relationships among stimuli when stimulus responses are linearly related to squared distances between stimulus scale values and person scores along a latent continuum. Applications to developmental and attitudinal data are discussed. (Author/JKS)

Huynh, Huynh – Psychometrika, 1977
A model for the setting of mastery cut scores is presented. The model, based on the beta-binomial test distribution, allows for hand calculation of cut scores. The model provides a simple way to explore the consequences of selecting a particular cut score. (Author/JKS)

Wolfe, Lee M. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1977
The analytical procedure of path analysis is described in terms of its use in nonexperimental settings in the social sciences. The description assumes a moderate statistical background on the part of the reader. (JKS)

Williams, R. D.; Cosart, W. P. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1976
Discusses an introductory chemical engineering course in which mathematical models are used to analyze experimental data. Concepts illustrated include dimensional analysis, scaleup, heat transfer, and energy conservation. (MLH)

Henson, R.; Stumbles, A. – Education in Chemistry, 1977
The relationship between mathematics and chemistry has been changing rapidly in recent years. Some chemistry teachers have experienced difficulties in their teaching with the introduction of modern mathematics in the schools. Some suggestions for reinforcing the concepts and language of modern mathematics are put forth. (Author/MA)

Brazier, Gerald D. – Mathematics Teacher, 1978
Elementary differential calculus is used to analyze and to discuss some complex economic situations. (JT)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Consumer Economics, Higher Education
Meyer, Rochelle Wilson – MATYC Journal, 1978
The author uses mathematical models that involve only algebra and a few basic ideas in discrete probability to describe the frequency of conception in large human societies. A number of calculations which can be done by students as exercises are given. (MN)

Eaves, David – Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 1976
Vector sum of a white noise in an unknown hyperspace and an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in an unknown line is observed through sharp linear test functions over a finite time span. Parameters associated with white noise are determinable and index measure-equivalence classes in relevant sample space. Intraclass relative density provides a basis for…

Kim, Jin Eun – Planning and Changing, 1977
This paper provides cost-effectiveness measures that can be used for analyzing secondary vocational programs in terms of program effectiveness against cost-efficiency. (Author/IRT)
Descriptors: Cost Effectiveness, Mathematical Models, Program Costs, Program Evaluation
Koehler, W. F. – Engineering Education, 1985
Describes a mathematical salary-growth model which serves as the basis of an objective conversion procedure (providing a more equitable merit-pay plan). Also demonstrates how this procedure was used and discusses additional benefits (particularly pertinent to institutions using arbitrary criteria to determine pay increments and have lock-step…

Raudenbush, Stephen W. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1988
Estimation theory in educational statistics and the application of hierarchical linear models are reviewed. Observations within each group vary as a function of microparameters. Microparameters vary across the population of groups as a function of macroparameters. Bayes and empirical Bayes viewpoints review examples with two levels of hierarchy.…

Ludlow, Larry H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
In the process of fitting a quantitative synthesis model, the assumption of homogeneous effect size variation is assessed via omnibus test statistics. Graphical representations of data on techniques for teaching composition skills are used to help determine the extent to which sample estimates deviate from modeled population estimates. (TJH)

Jones, William P.; Furnas, George W. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Presents a model for the geometric analysis of the relationship between information queries and information systems retrieval, and demonstrates the utility of this analysis by its application to six conventional information retrieval similarity measures and a seventh spreading activation measure. (Author/CLB)

Penfield, Douglas A.; Koffler, Stephen L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
The development of a nonparametric K-sample test for equality of slopes using Puri's generalized L statistic is presented. The test is recommended when the assumptions underlying the parametric model are violated. This procedure replaces original data with either ranks (for data with heavy tails) or normal scores (for data with light tails).…
