Empirical analysis of employment data compiled by the Civil Service Commission shows that blacks and females in federal employment earn considerably less than their white and male counterparts, despite federal personnel policy to eliminate discrimination. (MF)

Normal and obese children completed self-esteem and body-esteem questionnaires. Body-esteem was significantly correlated with self-esteem and percentage overweight. Body-esteem and relative weight were correlated; self-esteem and relative weight were not related. The body/self-esteem relation was the same for normal and obese children. (Author/RD)

One of the basic assumptions in regression analysis requires that independent variables in the equation should not be highly correlated. College freshmen's grade point averages at 260 colleges were predicted on the basis of multiple regression equations using the four previous classes separately to compute the equations. Predictor variables were four American College Test (ACT) scores and high school grades. Predictions remained accurate over the four-year period. (Author/CTM)

A Type VI error results from inconsistency between the researchers' question of interest and the statistical procedures employed to analyze the data. Using data on 1,438 Reykjavik children, this paper analyzes the influence of social origins, family characteristics, and IQ on scholastic performance in sixth, eighth, and ninth grades. Although IQ is the best single predictor of scholastic performance, both social structural and social psychological antecedents proved important. (Author/SJL)

This study determines cultural meanings of parent v nonparent roles using the following variables: one's generational group, place of residence, and family size. Generational differences appear to be the overwhelming influence on parental roles. The decision not to be a parent is an emerging role in contemporary culture. (CT)
