Using Mixed Methods to Explore Changes in the Emotional Intelligence of Law Students. Sage Research Methods: Data and Research Literacy
Cindy L. James
Sage Research Methods Cases
To further my research investigating the affective skills of university students, I engaged in a longitudinal mixed-methods study that explored the emotional intelligence (EI) of law students. For this study, I collected quantitative data to measure changes in EI of law students from their first to final year in the degree program. Then I gathered qualitative data from semistructured interviews with the students to explain the changes. By engaging in this longitudinal mixed-methods study using a sequential explanatory design, I was able to gather detailed data that produced EI profiles of law students and explanations, from the students' perspective, of how completing the law program impacted their emotional and social skills. Conducting this research was complex and time-consuming because it involved recruiting, collecting, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from three cohorts of students over a 6-year time frame. The effort was well worth it, though, because the findings were credible and provided valuable information about how participating in law education impacted the EI of law students.
