Partial Program Evaluation of the Hope Squad: Advisors' Perspectives of the Suicide Prevention Program
Brooklyn Elise Cook
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
Rising youth suicide rates in the last several years have become an increasingly critical issue both nationwide and within the state of Utah. In a World Health Organization (2019) suicide report, it was found that an estimated 62,118 youths between the ages of 10 and 19 completed suicide in 2016, making suicide the second leading cause of death for adolescents across the country. Additionally, Utah ranks sixth in the nation for the highest number of suicides, with Utah's youth suicide rate more than tripling in the last two decades alone (University of Utah, 2019). The rising rates of suicide for adolescents have led to calls for effective implementation of school-based suicide prevention programs. One school-based suicide prevention program that has come out of this need is the Hope Squad program. The Hope Squad is a school-based peer-to-peer suicide prevention program that attempts to educate students on the warning signs of suicide and reduce suicides among at-risk students (Wright-Berryman et al., 2018). With the Hope Squad being a newer program, there is a lack of research and key elements of the program have not been thoroughly evaluated. The research study of this dissertation is a partial program evaluation of the Hope Squad through the lens of the program advisors' perspectives. Accordingly, this partial program evaluation will answer the research questions of what are Hope Squad advisors' perceptions of the program's strengths and what are Hope Squad advisors' perspectives of the program's challenges.
