Peer reviewedSchneider, Paul L.; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1996
Performed correlational and multidimensional scaling analyses to assess the similarity between two models. Results support the similarity in structure between the people-things dimension from Holland's RIASEC (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional) model with the affiliation dimension from Wiggins' interpersonal…

Peer reviewedWeisel, Amatzia – Educational Psychology: An International Journal of Experimental Educational Psychology, 1988
Explores the relationship of attitudes toward disability and the frequency of contact with mainstreamed disabled children. Suggests the mere presence of disabled students in school settings does not have an intensive effect on the emotional reaction of nondisabled students and may be associated with more negative attitudes toward disabled persons.…

Peer reviewedDavison, Mark L.; Srichantra, Niyada – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1988
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and components solutions were compared using two balanced self-report item sets. Results suggest that when self-report items are balanced and negatively worded items are not reverse scored, MDS and components solutions can differ largely, due to a component associated with measures of acquiescence. (SLD)

Peer reviewedRocklin, Thomas – Applied Measurement in Education, 1992
College students rated dissimilarity of pairs of common test item formats. A multidimensional scaling model with individual differences fit to data from 111 students suggested that they used 2 dimensions to distinguish among the formats, 1 separating supply from selection items and 1 based on the number of options. (SLD)

McGrew, Kevin S.; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
Evaluation of multidimensional measures of community adjustment in 239 young adults with mild to severe mental retardation resulted in development of a cross-validated model which found such broad dimensions of community adjustment as social network integration, recreation leisure integration, community and economic integration, and need for…

Peer reviewedGitomer, Drew H.; Yamamoto, Kentaro – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1991
A model integrating latent trait and latent class theories in characterizing individual performance on the basis of qualitative understanding is presented. This HYBRID model is illustrated through experiments with 119 Air Force technicians taking a paper-and-pencil test and 136 Air Force technicians taking a computerized test. (SLD)

Vigneau, Francois; Bors, Douglas A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2005
The problem of dimensionality with respect to Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) specifically and, more generally, "g" or fluid intelligence, has been a long-standing issue. The present article reports two studies examining the dimensionality of both the original Set II of the APM (n = 506) and a short form (n = 644), using principal…

Graffeo, Lisa Cotlar; Silvestri, Lynette – Education, 2006
Locus of Control (LOC) deals with an individual's personal attribution of successful or failure. Those with internal LOC believe that events in their lives are under their personal control while individuals with external LOC feel that their lives are dominated by the environment. The theory has been applied to achievement and health-related issues…

Gierl, Mark J.; Leighton, Jacqueline P.; Tan, Xuan – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2006
DETECT, the acronym for Dimensionality Evaluation To Enumerate Contributing Traits, is an innovative and relatively new nonparametric dimensionality assessment procedure used to identify mutually exclusive, dimensionally homogeneous clusters of items using a genetic algorithm ( Zhang & Stout, 1999). Because the clusters of items are mutually…

Martin, Andrew J. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Background: This study seeks to identify the cornerstones of personal bests (PBs) in the educational setting. Aims: The study proposes a multidimensional PB model in which students are most likely to attain PBs on tasks/goals that are (1) specific, (2) challenging, (3) competitively self-referenced, and (4) self-improvement based. Sample: The…

Edmundson, Elizabeth W.; Koch, William R. – 1990
A study involving 234 Texas college students was undertaken to develop and test the validity and reliability of an instrument designed to measure college students' attitudes toward alcohol. Special attention was given to the content and construct validity of the instrument. Subjects ranged in age from 18 to 24 years. The mapping sentence served as…

Weiss, David J.; Suhadolnik, Debra – 1982
The present monte carlo simulation study was designed to examine the effects of multidimensionality during the administration of computerized adaptive testing (CAT). It was assumed that multidimensionality existed in the individuals to whom test items were being administered, i.e., that the correct or incorrect responses given by an individual…

Reckase, Mark D.; And Others – 1989
The purpose of the paper is to determine whether test forms of the Mathematics Usage Test (AAP Math) of the American College Testing Program are parallel in a multidimensional sense. The AAP Math is an achievement test of mathematics concepts acquired by high school students by the end of their third year. To determine the dimensionality of the…

Ackerman, Terry A. – 1988
Many researchers have suggested that the cause of differential item functioning (DIF) can in part be due to the misspecification of the supporting trait distribution (STD). This paper demonstrates how a unidimensional item response theory (IRT) calibration of response data, generated from a two-dimensional IRT model, results in DIF when the…

Parker, Stephanie A.; And Others – 1981
Depression therapy literature cites the importance of self-concept in formulating therapeutic strategies. Traditional depression measures catalog a client's symptoms, but fail to tap the structure of dysfunctional thoughts and judgments that form the client's self-concept. Vector-product multidimensional scaling was used to develop a measure of…
