Hughes, Judy A. – English Journal, 1991
Describes the positive experiences of a tenth grade writing teacher using peer evaluation to encourage revision of papers. (PRA)
Descriptors: Grade 10, High Schools, Peer Coaching, Peer Evaluation

Gifford, Janice A.; Swaminathan, Hariharan – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
The effects of priors and amount of bias in the Bayesian approach to the estimation problem in item response models are examined using simulation studies. Different specifications of prior information have only modest effects on Bayesian estimates, which are less biased than joint maximum likelihood estimates for small samples. (TJH)

McNamara, T. F. – Language Testing, 1990
Discusses the role of the Rasch model IRT in evaluating two subtests of the Occupational English test and argues for its use in exploring test constructs and in considering the implications of the empirical analysis presented for the validity of communicative language tests involving speaking and writing skills. (39 references) (Author/JL)

Fox, Dana L. – Teaching English in the Two-Year College, 1991
Asserts that extending reading journals to case studies of classmates as readers and viewing journal responses as "texts" help to redefine the study of literature and to build a community of interpreters of texts. Describes a course based on these ideas. (PRA)
Descriptors: Audience Response, Case Studies, College English, Community Colleges

Moffett, James; Wagner, Betty Jane – English Journal, 1991
Offers student-centered reading activities designed to bring students to reading maturity and involvement in literature. Discusses partner reading, dramatizing and performing texts, transforming texts, journal writing, discussion, and writing. (PRA)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Discussion (Teaching Technique), Journal Writing, Literature Appreciation

Jones, Douglas H.; Jin, Zhiying – Psychometrika, 1994
Replenishing item pools for on-line ability testing requires innovative and efficient data collection. A method is proposed to collect test item calibration data in an on-line testing environment sequentially using locally D-optimum designs, thereby achieving high Fisher information for the item parameters. (SLD)

Gunter, Philip L.; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1993
In this case study, music was applied noncontingently and contingently across four settings with an adolescent male with autism, to reduce aberrant, repetitive vocalizations. The intervention was associated with dramatic reductions in the primary aberrant behavior and reductions in two other aberrant behaviors. Task performance was differentially…

Schumacker, Randall E. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1992
This study reports findings on the types of quality indicators identified for elementary and secondary schools by 71.5% of school superintendents from 1,055 districts and the subsequent rating scale analysis using Rasch measurement procedures. The practical utility of such a scale is discussed. (SLD)

Styles, Irene; Andrich, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
This paper describes the use of the Rasch model to help implement computerized administration of the standard and advanced forms of Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM), to compare relative item difficulties, and to convert scores between the standard and advanced forms. The sample consisted of 95 girls and 95 boys in Australia. (SLD)

Ichimura, Takahisa – Peabody Journal of Education, 1993
Examines teacher's use of their personal knowledge and qualities, such as trust, acceptance, tolerance, or sympathy toward the learner, as a means of helping students in teacher education develop and use their personal knowledge. The article focuses on the element of uncertainty and its effect on the teacher student relationship. (GLR)

Nandakumar, Ratna; Stout, William – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
A detailed investigation is provided of Stout's statistical procedure (the computer program DIMTEST) for testing the hypothesis that an essentially unidimensional latent trait model fits observed binary item response data from a psychological test. Three refinements achieve greater power. The revised approach is validated using real data sets.…

Cothern, Nancy B. – Reading Research and Instruction, 1993
Provides a definition and description of the response process and a description of the teacher's role. Describes ERMAA (experiencing the literary work, responding, mapping and analyzing multiple responses, and affirming the inherent individuality of response), a one-week strategy designed to facilitate literary response in the classroom. (RS)

Farris, Pamela J.; Howe, Katherine Hansell; Fuhler, Carol J. – Clearing House, 1998
Describes how literature-response journals were used in a fifth-grade social studies class, as students "journaled" with their parents as they read four Civil War novels. (SR)

Bendersky, Margaret; Lewis, Michael – Developmental Psychology, 1998
Examined arousal regulation as a function of levels of prenatal cocaine exposure in 4-month-olds, using a "still face" procedure. Found that, independent of several other factors, a greater percentage of heavily cocaine-exposed infants, compared to unexposed infants, showed less enjoyment during "en face" play with their mothers and continued to…
