There is a great need for more research in the field of teacher education. Specifically, the objectives of teacher education, the value systems of the groups engaged in the enterprise, the nature of their interaction, the desired direction of change, and the processes that are employed to promote change need to be explored. Emphasizes the use of research that is related to library technical services and notes need for research in four general areas--surveys of predominant practice, library operation case studies, development research, and environment status reports. Issues pertaining to historical scholarship in general are discussed, and suggestions for improving the level of scholarship in histories of physical education, leisure, and sport are given. Historians should possess broad knowledge of the culture, social institutions, and ideas of the past if they are to write about them. (PP)

The question of whether educational research should be considered as a career or as an activity which those in education undertake is addressed. After considering criteria for a research career, the conclusion is that the forms of educational development are too varied to provide the basis for a research career. (KC)

A sense of meaning and collective continuity--therefore of history--is more important now than ever. Historical scholarship has never been more sophisticated, innovative, and interesting, but historians must find new ways to respond to the public's interest at its own level. (MSE)
