The Evolving Landscape of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Higher Education: A Critical Examination of Challenges and Advocacy in Texas
Tihirah Ruffin
College Student Affairs Journal, v43 n2 p120-124 2025
While many higher education institutions highlight their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), recent legislation and policies across several Southern states have indicated significant pushback against these initiatives, with some states enacting bans or restrictions on DEI efforts on college campuses. This essay will examine the evolving role of DEI in higher education through a Southern lens, tracing its development alongside pivotal historical events such as desegregation, racism, and affirmative action. Special attention is given to contemporary sociopolitical contexts in the SACSA region, where ongoing debates and restrictions shape both policy and practice for student affairs professionals. As the disclosure of DEI evolves into a more comprehensive framework, such as justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), this essay highlights the need for intentional advocacy and dialogue among practitioners and educational leaders in the South. By critically analyzing past and present practices while anticipating future challenges, this work aims to equip student affairs professionals with the knowledge and recommendations to foster equitable, inclusive, and supportive environments for diverse student populations in the region.
