Ingram, David; Thompson, William – Language, 1996
Presents the Lexical/Semantic Hypothesis, which proposes that early learning is more lexically oriented, and that early word combinations can be explained by more semantically oriented accounts than the Full Competence Hypothesis. The article also replaces the Grammatical Infinitive Hypothesis with the Modal Hypothesis. (32 references) (Author/CK)

Byrne, Ruth M. J.; Handley, Simon J. – Cognition, 1997
Three experiments examined strategies for solving suppositional deductions to compare control structures proposed by rule theory and model theory. Puzzles were based on assertors who may be truth-tellers and their assertions about their truth-telling status. Reasoners made backward and forward inferences, found generating suppositions difficult,…

Tsuchiyama, Elaine – Primary Voices K-6, 1997
Describes how a first-grade teacher used the "hypothesis-test" approach with Devin, a first grader who struggled as a reader and writer. Points out that, when she started working with Devin, she wanted to understand his difficulties, but by the end, she realized that it was her curriculum, not his difficulties, that needed to be in the foreground.…

Yoshizaki, Lynn – Primary Voices K-6, 1997
Describes how a Title 1 lead teacher used the "hypothesis-test" approach with Joshua, a fifth-grade student from a "ravaged background" who was about two years behind in academic performance. Shows how, pursuing his inquiry, Joshua eventually became a strategic reader and a confident engaged learner. Notes that Joshua's turning point was also the…

Lawson, Anton E.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
This article offers five research criteria and their rationale to help researchers avoid problems and to help them improve research. Improving research should improve the quality of science teaching. The treatment of causal hypotheses is stressed. (Author/CW)

Dosary, Fahad M. Al – Library and Information Science Research, 1988
Discussion of citation behavior as a function of research characteristics focuses on an analysis of citation patterns of political scientists in relation to variations in their research approaches. Hypothesis tested are given, citation measures are described, analytic procedures are explained, and further research needs are suggested. (40…

Garrison, James W.; Hoskisson, Kenneth – Reading Teacher, 1989
Argues that confirming reading predictions emphasizes supporting evidence, while refuting predictions reinforces positive patterns of logic and scientific inquiry. Shows how teachers can change questions of confirmation to questions of refutation, using question examples about the story "Old Ben Bailey Meets His Match." (MM)

Morris, John D.; Huberty, Carl J. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1995
A method is presented for extending full versus restricted model testing to predictive discriminant analysis when the criterion of model accuracy is classification hit rate. An example is presented involving the dropout or school persistence of 76 5th graders, and a computer program for the analysis is introduced. (SLD)

Storey, Richard D.; Carter, Jack – Science Teacher, 1992
Authors discuss "the scientific method" and assert that laboratory scientists ask questions but seldom state formal hypotheses to be answered by controlled experiments. Authors suggest that experimental results should not be viewed as fact, and students should not be required to memorize the steps of the scientific method. (PR)

Weismer, Susan Ellis – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
This study, which assessed hypothesis-testing abilities using a discrimination-learning paradigm, found that 16 language-impaired primary-level children solved fewer problems than 16 controls equated on cognitive level, but the 2 groups used similar hypothesis types to solve the problems. Type of verbal feedback (explicit versus nonexplicit) did…
