Kraemer, Helena Chmura – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1985
A method is suggested to incorporate instruction in the concept and the application of power considerations into an applied statistics course. This is based on designing one table usable for a wide range of the type of statistical tests usually introduced in such a course. (Author)

Thompson, Bruce – Journal of Experimental Education, 1985
Advantages and disadvantages of three analytic methods are discussed. A hypothetical data set is employed to make the discussion complete. It is suggested that commonality analysis can be usefully employed in research studies in education, particularly when aptitute-treatment interaction studies are involved. (Author/LMO)

Owen, Elizabeth; Sweller, John – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1985
The authors hypothesize that a means-end strategy places a load on cognitive processing capacity which retards knowledge acquisition. Three experiments using trigonometry problems with high school students were conducted in which the problem goal was modified to disrupt strategy used by novices. Results supported the authors' hypothesis.…

This paper explains how to combine probabilities from discrete distributions, such as probability distributions for nonparametric tests. (Author/BW)

Brainerd, C. J.; Kingma, J. – Cognitive Psychology, 1985
Nine experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that short-term memory and information processing share a common pool of scarce resources. (LMO)

Bergen, John R.; Stone, Clement A. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1986
Six hundred twenty-six subjects from the University of Arizona participated in an investigation designed to examine congruence of a math domain hierarchy validated psychometrically and validated instructionally. Three studies revealed congruence between hierarchies validated psychometrically and instructionally. Generalization and transfer were…

McIsaac, Marina Stock; And Others – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1984
Graduate students individually examined 34 photographs for an investigation of commonly perceived underlying visual dimensions. Similarity judgements between photographs were used for multidimensional scaling; subject interview data were used to describe meaningful visual concepts. Results indicate that pictures were grouped in clusters along…

Ellett, Frederick S., Jr. – Educational Theory, 1984
The author briefly characterizes two ways to confirm the empirical part of educational theories: the hypothetico-deductive method and the Bayesian method. It is argued that the Bayesian approach can be justified. (JMK)

Crane, Robert L.; Jacobson, Marjory – NASSP Bulletin, 1976
An adjusted study program can provide relief to both problem students and their teachers. This article tells how, at minimal cost, improvement can be realized in student attitudes and achievement. (Editor)

Polivy, Janet; Herman, C. Peter – Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1976
It was hypothesized that depressed patients who were identified as restrained on the basis of Herman and Polivy's (1975) restraint scale would report having gained weight in conjunction with their depression, whereas unrestrained patients would report weight loss. (Author)

Schiffenbauer, Allen; Schiavo, R. Steven – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1976
This study was designed to test the effects of both interaction distance and the quality of the interaction upon attraction. The implications of this research for studies concerning crowding is discussed, as are possible explanatory mechanisms. (Editor/RK)

Norman, Ross – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1976
Examines two specific hypotheses on the dynamics of persuasion: first, whether the manipulation of arguments presented to support an advocated opinion should influence the effectiveness of an expert source more than an attractive source, and second, audience reaction toward expert versus attractive sources when considering a number of arguments…

Knox, Robert E.; Safford, R. Kirk – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1976
McCauley, Stitt, Woods and Lipton's finding that groups were more conservative than individuals when betting at a race track has been criticized on statistical and methodological grounds. This study evaluates their research and sustains their general results and conclusions. (Editor/RK)

Overholt, George E.; Stallings, William M. – Educational Researcher, 1976
Attempts to demonstrate that the ethnographic hypothesis is both culturally relevant and empirically grounded. It is noted that any hypothesis which lacks these attributes is inappropriate for cross cultural research. (Author/AM)
