Evidence is presented both for and against the proposition that innovation is punished by surveys that rank academic quality. Systematic work is needed to show how innovation, experimentation, and lack of orthodoxy in research and teaching affect Ph.D. programs' ratings in academic quality rankings. (Author/MLW)

Surveyed 69 current and former graduate students to determine attitude change, perception of expectations, and factors influencing research. Analysis of the data showed that although students perceived their program's expectations for research to be greater than their own wants, the students' interest increased throughout and after trainng.
