Rooted Jazz Dance Education and Performance: Latasha Barnes, Erinn Liebhard, and Pat Taylor Speak Out
Journal of Dance Education, v25 n3 p313-323 2025
Based primarily on interviews with three outstanding jazz dance artists, this article examines some important topics within the realm of jazz dance education and performance. LaTasha Barnes, creator of "The Jazz Continuum," teaches at Arizona State University (ASU). Erinn Liebhard, director of Rhythmically Speaking, teaches at colleges and public schools in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. Pat Taylor, director of JazzAntiqua Dance & Music Ensemble in Los Angeles, teaches at a local theater where JazzAntiqua is a resident company, as well as area colleges. While each of these dance companies is distinct in approach, they share a connection to "rooted" jazz dance, which emphasizes Africanist aesthetics. The purpose of this research was to gain a greater understanding of the approaches of these artists regarding topics including defining technique, warmups, class content and structure, company models, relationships to music, bias experienced, and future directions of jazz dance education.
