Using traditional anthropological methods of field study of families and living with a Black welfare family and a Caucasian family provided bases for developing an analysis of the socialization patterns. A modified set of criteria based on sociology is suggested as a framework for evaluating the social implications of educational software. A semantic barrier exists in the English lexicon, separating the lexes of conservative peripheral dialects from those of dominant central dialects, producing differential educational attainment, and reproducing class-based division of labor.
