Two experiments were conducted in order to discover (a) the expressed attitudes of young adults about the intellectual abilities of seven target groups ranging in age from infant to elderly, and (b) if and in what manner young adults differentially explain the rules of a simple game to these same target groups. Decomposed matrix games were used to study interethnic competition in the triethnic school system of a southwestern city. The sample consisted of sixth-grade males from segregated schools. Results on the game matrices indicated that the anglos competed more and were less trusting than the blacks or chicanos. (Author)

A group of college males who had reported themselves unable to interact with women were contacted and asked to record every interaction for a week. Following this period a series of behavioral tests was given. After pretesting shy subjects were randomly assigned to a control group or a treatment group. Treatment improved social skills. The nature and development of interpersonal perceptions in a T group were studied. Results indicate that group members' perceptions are relatively complex and change markedly over sessions in ways consistent with current theories of group development. Studied the efficacy of induced affect as a pregroup training experience for coping with stress related to participation in an encounter group. Results indicated that group participants who did not receive the induced-affect pregroup training demonstrated significant increases on the Neuroticism scale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory. One hundred fifteen depressed inpatients with a history of attempted suicide were matched by age and sex with 115 nonsuicidal depressed patients and 285 normal subjects. The results indicated that the early separation of parent from child does not, in itself, predispose the child to attempted suicide. (Author)
