This study investigated the impact of shifts in age identification by older people (N=323) from "middle-aged" to "elderly" within the context of the labeling theory of deviance. Age identification was unrelated to attitudes toward old people and the label "elderly" did not affect self-esteem through any "gate-keeping" process. (Author)

College recruiters (N=66) evaluated the qualifications and employability of either a male or a female applicant for a supervisory position. Contrary to the hypotheses, the moderately aggressive female was rated as favorably as the moderately aggressive male and the passive male was rated as negatively as the passive female. (Author)

Rural male (N=99) classified in an earlier study as low or high identification males were surveyed five years after graduation. Results indicate statistical differences between groups on occupational status and achievement, educational achievement, and optimism about the future. (Author)

Bernstein's theory was tested in the homosexual's "closed" community to determine code-switching ability and its relationship to jargon. Subjects told a story based on homoerotic photographs where knowledge of sexual orientation was varied. Results suggest that homosexual homophyly encouraged elaboration. (Author)
