This paper, presented at the Gerontological Society meeting, October 1975, Louisville, examines the hypothesis that attitudinal differences between age groups will vary by type of community. Comparisons are made of 24 attitude scale scores by 224 young-old persons and 42 old-old persons. More differences were found in the urban groups. (Author)

To determine why they were not attending a free audit program at the university and to ascertain their attitudes toward education for the elderly, 99 subjects aged 62 and older were interviewed. The effects of counselor verbal behavior (reflections, probes, and restatements) and counselor nonverbal behavior (presence or absence of nodding and smiling) upon 48 subjects was examined. Probes resulted in more discussion of feelings than did either reflections or restatements. Nonverbal behavior did not effect discussion of feelings. (Author)

The different responses of introverts and extraverts to two types of helper nonverbal attending were examined. Subjects were 26 introverts and 26 extraverts, as defined by Eysenck and Eysenck's questionnaire. Introverts rated the listener higher than did extraverts, independent of his posture. (Author)
