Peer reviewedEllison, Herbert R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
An experiment is conducted to measure the enthalpy of vaporization of volatile compounds like methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, and others by using gas chromatography. This physical property was measured using a very tiny quantity of sample revealing that it is possible to measure the enthalpies of two or more compounds at the same time.

Dahsah, Chanyah; Coll, Richard K.; Sung-ong, Sunan; Yutakom, Naruemon; Sanguanruang, Sudjit – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 2008
The international literature suggests students frequently resort to the use of formulae when solving stoichiometry problems without understanding the concepts. In prior work we identified Thai student alternative conceptions and ability to solve numerical problem for stoichiometry. The results indicate that many Thai students also hold alternative…

Peer reviewedMacFarland, Darren K.; Gorodetzer, Rebecca – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
Organometallic complex synthesis in advanced inorganic or organic courses usually begin with the synthesis of ferrocene. A synthetic experiment of an alternative compound that has a more interesting structure and the same air stability that makes ferrocene desirable is presented.

Pinto, Gabriel – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The topic of calcium supplement and its effects on human lives is presented in the way of questions to the students. It enables the students to realize the relevance of chemistry outside the classroom surrounding.

Jansoon, Ninna; Somsook, Ekasith; Coll, Richard K. – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 2008
The research reported in this study consisted of an investigation of student learning experiences in Thai chemistry laboratories using the Jigsaw IV method. A hands-on experiment based on the Jigsaw IV method using a real life example based on green tea beverage was designed to improve student affective variables for studying topics related to…

Peer reviewedAult, Addison – Journal of Chemical Education, 2001
Discusses how chemists describe an amount of material and provides a visual representation for the solution of typical stoichiometry problems. (YDS)

Peer reviewedHoppe, Jack I.; Malati, Mounir A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
An experimental study of ceramic superconductors namely YBa2Cu3O(sub 7-x), which illustrates the use of spectrophotometry, based on the electronic spectra of complexes of Fe(II), Fe(III) and Cu(II) to better understand the stoichiometry of YBCO is described. The results from this experiment are in good agreement with those obtained by the…

Peer reviewedMeek, Terry L.; Garner, Leah D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The usefulness of the bond triangle for categorizing compounds of the main-group elements may be extended by the use of weighted average electronegativities to allow distinction between compounds of the same elements with different stoichiometries. In such cases a higher valency for the central atom leads to greater covalent character and the…

Peer reviewedFishtik, Ilie; Berka, Ladislav H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A simple algorithm for a complete enumeration of the possible ways a redox reaction (RR) might be uniquely decomposed into half-reactions (HRs) using the response reactions (RERs) formalism is presented. A complete enumeration of the possible ways a RR may be decomposed into HRs is equivalent to a complete enumeration of stoichiometrically…

Peer reviewedMills, Nancy S.; Spence, John D.; Bushey, Michelle M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A series of substituted benzoic acids (SBAs) are prepared by students. The pKa shift, a result of the electron-withdrawing or electron-donating characteristics of the subsistent is examined in reference to the electrophoretic migration behavior of benzoic acid.

Peer reviewedSchmitz, Guy – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The definition of reaction rate is derived and demonstrations are made for the care to be taken while using the term. Reaction rate can be in terms of a reaction property, the extent of reaction and thus it is possible to give a definition applicable in open and closed systems.

Peer reviewedDeMeo, Stephen – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The existence of different stoichiometries in two basic zinc carbonates helps to explain their decomposition potential, and to select between the two compound formulas, which better describes zinc carbonate. The accuracy of the experiment makes it a viable means for students to perform various quantitative measurements.

Peer reviewedPatterson, James; Sigurdsson, Snorri Th. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The reduction of ethyl acetoacetate using common baker's yeast is a traditional experiment that shows the stereoselective power of a biochemical system. Addition of organic solvents to aqueous reaction system increased the yields and reproducibility of the experiment thus overcoming the two problems associated with the experiment, low yield, and…

Peer reviewedWhite, Lori L.; Kittredge, Kevin W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The reduction of carbonyl groups by sodium borohydride though is a well-known reaction in most organic lab texts, a difficulty for an instructor adopting this reaction in a student lab is that it is too long. Using a microwave assisted organic synthesis solves this difficulty and one such reaction, which is the microwave-assisted reduction of…

Peer reviewedNicholas, Christopher J.; Taylor, Melissa R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation is developed that focuses on the varying enantiomeric excess of the product diols based on the structures of the alkenes being oxidized. The experimental sequence enables investigation of this reaction in terms of the different chiral ligands being used.
