Analysis of 94 responses by Australian mothers of mentally retarded children to a questionnaire concerning stress indicated that 42% experienced a high level of stress. Life strains were more strongly linked to stress than were life events, and mothers' self esteem predicted stress better than did degree of external support. (DB)
