Busk, Patricia L.; Marascuilo, Leonard A. – Australian Journal of Education, 1989
An extension of the discussion of loglinear models presents post hoc procedures for statistically evaluating treatment effects, contrasts, and confidence intervals, illustrating methods for main effect and interaction contrasts and paying special attention to odds ratios and their interval estimates. Procedures for treating variables as…

Games, Paul A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1988
A distinction is made between statistics based on scientific theory and theory-free statistics. This distinction is discussed in the contexts of hypothesis testing, Bayesian inference, a priori planned contrasts, a new simple computational method, and alternative data interpretations. (TJH)

Dolan, Conor V.; Molenaar, Peter C. M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
In multigroup covariance structure analysis with structured means, the traditional latent selection model is formulated as a special case of phenotypic selection. Illustrations with real and simulated data demonstrate how one can test specific hypotheses concerning selection on latent variables. (SLD)

Hoerman, Heidi Lee; Nowicke, Carole Elizabeth – Library Quarterly, 1995
Examines documents and citations relating to literature of the Ortega Hypothesis, reviews citing behaviors and errors of individual citations, and includes analysis of the occurrences of secondary and tertiary citing. Findings show there is little evidence to prove that secondary and tertiary citing is not occurring and suggests that further…

Loehle, Craig – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1994
This discussion of the discovery process in science suggests that discoveries are often made by a pattern recognition process which includes elaboration of a perceived pattern involving development of a descriptive vocabulary, elucidation of mathematical relations and measures, development of measurement instruments and techniques, and deduction…

Hess, Thomas M.; Slaughter, Susan Jensvold – Developmental Psychology, 1990
Two experiments examined the hypothesis that aging is associated with an increase in schema-related influences on memory performance. Attention allocated during the study was disrupted more by lack of scene organization in older adults. There were relatively systematic age differences for retention. (RH)

Stelzl, Ingeborg – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Criteria for factor identification in factor analysis according to J. Algina (1980) are summarized, and a procedure is presented to determine rotationally underidentified factors by adding restrictors and to carry out the rotation for old and new restrictions and in latent path analysis. Two illustrations are presented. (SLD)

Croson, Rachel T. A. – Simulation & Gaming, 1999
Compares face-to-face negotiation outcomes with computer-mediated negotiation outcomes using an integrative (win-win) negotiation. Highlights include the use of electronic mail; literature reviews on negotiation literature, computer-mediated communication literature, and computer-mediated negotiation literature; hypotheses tested; Pareto…

Nola, Robert – Science and Education, 1999
Discusses the philosophical strengths and weaknesses of Laudan's normative naturalism, which understands the principles of scientific method to be akin to scientific hypotheses, and therefore open to test like any principle of science. Contains 19 references. (Author/WRM)

Vacha-Haase, Tammi; Thompson, Bruce – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1998
Responds to Biskin's comments (this issue) on the significance test controversy. Highlights areas of agreement (importance of replication evidence, importance of effect sizes) and disagreement (influence of sample size, evaluation of populations vs. samples, significance of Carver's article). Includes further recommendations for reporting research…

Mulaik, Stanley A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1998
Argues that H. W. Marsh and K.-T. Hau (1996) misunderstood parsimony and its role in testing a hypothesis about an incompletely specified model to establish its objective validity. More parsimonious models represent more complete hypotheses having more ways of being tested and confirmed. Marsh and Hau could also have used more parsimonious…

Finch, Sue; Cumming, Geoff; Thomason, Neil – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2001
Analyzed 150 articles from the "Journal of Applied Psychology" (JAP) from 1940 to 1999 to determine statistical reporting practices related to null hypothesis significance testing, American Psychological Association guidelines, and reform recommendations. Findings show little evidence that decades of cogent criticisms by reformers have…

Coombs, William T.; Algina, James – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1996
Type I error rates for the Johansen test were estimated using simulated data for a variety of conditions. Results indicate that Type I error rates for the Johansen test depend heavily on the number of groups and the ratio of the smallest sample size to the number of dependent variables. Sample size guidelines are presented. (SLD)

Brem, Sarah K.; Boyes, Andrea J. – Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation, 2000
Complements guidelines addressing the mechanics of online searching by considering how treating searching as exercises in critical thinking can improve the use of online resources. Discusses metacognition, hypothesis testing, and argumentation, with illustrative examples and links to tools that facilitate the searching process. (SLD)

Leahey, Erin – Social Forces, 2005
In this paper, I trace the development of statistical significance testing standards in sociology by analyzing data from articles published in two prestigious sociology journals between 1935 and 2000. I focus on the role of two key elements in the diffusion literature, contagion and rationality, as well as the role of institutional factors. I find…
