Shine, Lester C., II – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The interpretation of significant left-tailed analysis of variance (ANOVA) F-ratios is supported by considering the case of a fixed effects ANOVA model. The conclusions of this case are generalizable to other standard ANOVA models. (Author/PN)

Metcalfe Eich, Janet – Psychological Review, 1982
A model of association formation, storage, and retrieval is described. Experiments which test new predictions derived from the model against human recall are reported. The model is applied to previous findings: prototype abstraction, the A-B A-D paradigm and the Osgood transfer surface. Previous models of memory are discussed. (Author/RD)

Stern, David – Economics of Education Review, 1982
Presents a mathematical model concerning the implicit risks to employers and employees of investing in on-the-job training (OJT). Suggests how to reduce OJT risks through "training insurance," where risks are pooled among employers and employees, and discusses more efficient contracts, losses due to layoffs, and OJT technology improvement.…

Reilly, Gilbert J. – Review of Economics and Statistics, 1982
Proposes a model for evaluating state equalization aid formulas, accounting for municipal overburden and tradeoffs between expenditures and taxes. Tests the model using the Michigan state aid formula. Results relate elasticities to spending and tax levels and suggest that relatively unrestricted guaranteed tax base formulas can work. (PGD)

Bronson, Richard – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1982
The use of continuous simulation is promoted as a teaching tool in the undergraduate curriculum. Simulation, advances in continuous simulation, an approach to teaching system dynamics, computer languages deemed suitable for continuous simulation, and an outline of a prototypic first course in continuous simulation are presented. Cotter, Kay Lillig; Raju, Nambury S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Eight formula-based estimates of population squared cross-validity and nine estimates of factor scores were compared with estimates from the conventional cross-validation procedure. Burket's and Rozeboom's formula-based estimates of population squared cross-validity in combination with a factor score method offer the most for practitioners…

Hall, Susan J.; Depauw, Karen P. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
A theoretical 18-link model of the human body was designed as a sex-generalized predictor of segmental inertial parameters. Body measurements of 40 male and female subjects from 6 to 35 years of age were used. The results were similar to those reported in other studies and the photogrammetric procedure was found to be facilitative. (Authors/JN)

Murphy, Kevin R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
When either regression models or subjectively-weighted models are used as aids in making placement decisions, the discriminant validity of these models is questioned. The validity of several regression models and of subjectively weighted models was investigated in two experiments. (Author/JKS)

Magidson, Jay; Sorbom, Dag – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1982
LISREL V computer program is applied to a weak quasi-experimental design involving the Head Start program, as a multiple analysis attempt to assure that differences between nonequivalent control groups do not confound interpretation of a posteriori differences. (PN)

Robinson, Earl J.; Turner, Stephen J. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Fuzzy set theory, a mathematical modeling technique that allows for the consideration of such factors as "professional expertise" in decision making, is discussed as a tool for use in libraries--specifically in collection management. The fundamentals of fuzzy set theory are introduced and a reference list is included. (JL)

van der Linden, Wim J. – Psychometrika, 1981
Decision rules for assigning students to treatments based upon aptitudes or criterion scores are discussed. Popular procedures are criticized and a Bayesian approach is recommended. The effect of unreliability of aptitude or criterion scores is also discussed. (JKS)

Bayus, Barry; Kendis, Kurt – Journal of Education Finance, 1982
In this econometric model of the Guaranteed Student Loan Program (GSLP), supply is related to banks' liquidity and yield curves, all lenders' economic costs and returns, and Student Loan Marketing Association activity. GSLP demand is based on loan costs, family debt position, and net student need for financial aid. (RW)

Wilson, Thomas P. – Sociological Methods and Research, 1979
A recent recommendation by Holt (EJ 200 576) that coefficients resulting from estimating log-linear and similar models should not be interpreted is argued to be based on lack of clarity about the substantive and theoretical importance of the choice between dummy and effect coding for categorical variables. Whitely, Susan E. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
A model which gives maximum likelihood estimates of measurement error within the context of a simplex model for practice effects is presented. The appropriateness of the model is tested for five traits, and error estimates are compared to the classical formula estimates. (Author/JKS)
