McGinness, Lachlan P.; Savage, C. M. – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2016
We report on progress towards the development of an Action Concept Inventory (ACI), a test that measures student understanding of action principles in introductory mechanics and optics. The ACI also covers key concepts of many-paths quantum mechanics, from which classical action physics arises. We used a multistage iterative development cycle for…

Privat, Romain; Jaubert, Jean-Noe¨l; Berger, Etienne; Coniglio, Lucie; Lemaitre, Ce´cile; Meimaroglou, Dimitrios; Warth, Vale´rie – Journal of Chemical Education, 2016
Robust and fast methods for chemical or multiphase equilibrium calculation are routinely needed by chemical-process engineers working on sizing or simulation aspects. Yet, while industrial applications essentially require calculation tools capable of discriminating between stable and nonstable states and converging to nontrivial solutions,…

Vázquez-Alonso, Ángel; Manassero-Mas, María-Antonia; García-Carmona, Antonio; Montesano de Talavera, Marisa – Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching, 2016
This study applies a new quantitative methodological approach to diagnose epistemology conceptions in a large sample. The analyses use seven multiple-rating items on the epistemology of science drawn from the item pool Views on Science-Technology-Society (VOSTS). The bases of the new methodological diagnostic approach are the empirical…

Edelmann, Hans G.; Martius, Thilo; Hahn, Achim; Schlüter, Kirsten; Nessler, Stefan H. – School Science Review, 2016
Enquiry learning and teaching about the nature of science (NoS) is a key element of science education. We have designed an experimental setting for students aged 12-14 years to exercise enquiry-learning skills and to introduce students to the NoS aspects of creativity and imagination. It also illustrates the impact of carbon dioxide on the growth…

Zeidler, Dana L.; Herman, Benjamin C.; Clough, Michael P.; Olson, Joanne K.; Kahn, Sami; Newton, Mark – Journal of Science Teacher Education, 2016
This editorial examines significant deleterious issues that have emerged unchecked, and seemingly embraced unwittingly, by the greater science education community, the public at-large, and even segments of the international science education community. Their claims are grounded in three main cases that are distinct, yet intertwined with one…

Miller, Sarah; Tanner, Kimberly D. – CBE - Life Sciences Education, 2015
In an introductory biology course, undergraduate students are expected to become familiar with, and be able to use, hundreds of new terms to navigate the complex ideas in biology. And this is just in the introductory course! Juxtapose this student situation with the common frustration expressed by biologists that there is "just too much…

Aguilar, Horacio Munguía; Maldonado, Rigoberto Franco – Physics Education, 2015
A simple capacitive cell for dielectric constant measurement in liquids is presented. As an illustrative application, the cell is used for measuring the degradation of overheated edible oil through the evaluation of their dielectric constant.

Belenkiy, Ari – Physics Teacher, 2015
Recently much attention has been paid to the history of the discovery of Hubble's law--the linear relation between the rate of recession of the remote galaxies and distance to them from Earth. Though historians of cosmology now mention several names associated with this law instead of just one, the motivation of each actor of that remarkable…

Prentice, A.; Fatuzzo, M.; Toepker, T. – Physics Teacher, 2015
By describing the motion of a charged particle in the well-known nonuniform field of a current-carrying long straight wire, a variety of teaching/learning opportunities are described: 1) Brief review of a standard problem; 2) Vector analysis; 3) Dimensionless variables; 4) Coupled differential equations; 5) Numerical solutions.

Østergaard, Edvin – Cultural Studies of Science Education, 2015
The question of how to foster rooting in science education points towards a double challenge; efforts to "prevent" (further) uprooting and efforts to "promote" rooting/re-rooting. Wolff-Michael Roth's paper discusses the uprooting/rooting pair of concepts, students' feeling of alienation and loss of fundamental sense of the…

Ladino, L. A.; Rondón, S. H. – Physics Education, 2015
This article describes an alternative method to determine the refractive index of transparent liquids. The method only requires a laser pointer, a ruler and a modified fish tank.

Ince, Elif; Acar, Yavuz; Temur, Senem – European Journal of Physics Education, 2015
Physics education through physics toys is quite a popular method in foreign countries yet it is still not applied in our country. The aim of this study is to investigation of physics toys' effectiveness of students' physics principles explanation and their attitude towards physics toys. Selected physics toys include subjects of mechanic,…

Yadav, Manoj K. – Physics Education, 2014
This paper aims to clarify the misconception about the violation of the principle of floatation. Improper understanding of the definition of "displaced fluid" by a floating body leads to the misconception. With the help of simple experiments, this article shows that there is no violation of the principle of floatation.

Reif, Marc – Physics Teacher, 2014
I came up with a new way to introduce the concept of a constant gravitational field near the surface of the Earth. I made "g-field detectors" (see Fig. 1 ) and suspended them by strings from the ceiling in a regular spacing. The detectors are cardstock arrows with a hole punched out of them and the letter "g" in the center.

Bancroft, Samuel; Bancroft, Ben; Greenwood, Jake – Physics Education, 2014
An experiment was carried out to investigate the changes in ionizing cosmic radiation as a function of altitude. This was carried out using a Geiger-Müller tube on-board a high altitude balloon, which rose to an altitude of 31 685 m. The gathered data show that the Geiger-Müller tube count readings increased to a maximum at an altitude of about 24…
