McDonald, Roderick P.; Hartmann, Wolfgang M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
An algorithm for obtaining initial values for the minimization process in covariance structure analysis is developed that is more generally applicable for computing parameters connected to latent variables than the currently existing ones. The algorithm is formulated in terms of the RAM model but can be extended. (SLD)

Kiers, Henk A. L.; Takane, Yoshio – Psychometrika, 1993
The DEcomposition into DIrectional COMponents (DEDICOM) method for analysis of asymmetric data gives representations that are identified only up to a non-singular transformation. To identify solutions, it is proposed that subspace constraints be imposed on the stimulus coefficients. Procedures are discussed for several cases. (SLD)

Twitchell, David, Ed. – Educational Technology, 1990
This second installment in a series of edited transcripts based on a conference held at Utah State University in 1987 reviews the main points of Merrill's Learning Theory. The performance content matrix is explained, primary presentation forms are described, and the concepts of student responsibility and learner control are discussed. (Three…

Wothke, Werner; Browne, Michael W. – Psychometrika, 1990
The composite direct-product model for the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix is reparamaterized as a second-order factor analysis model. This process facilitates the use of widely available computer programs--LISREL and LISCOMP--for fitting the model. If bounds on phi and theta are not imposed to avoid inadmissible values, convergence problems…

Duncan, Terry E.; Alpert, Anthony; Duncan, Susan C. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1998
An analysis of sibling data from the National Youth Survey shows the pitfalls of ignoring issues of independence and demonstrate how conventional covariance structure software can be easily adapted to handle hierarchical models, providing a new approach that models within-level and between-level covariance matrices in familial antisocial behavior.…

Maris, Eric; And Others – Psychometrika, 1996
Generalizing Boolean matrix decomposition to a larger class of matrix decomposition models is demonstrated, and probability matrix decomposition (PMD) models are introduced as a probabilistic version of the larger class. An algorithm is presented for the computation of maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimates of the parameters of PMD…

Quon, W. Steve – Physics Teacher, 1996
Describes a method to combine two learning experiences--optical physics and matrix mathematics--in a straightforward laboratory experiment that allows engineering/physics students to integrate a variety of learning insights and technical skills, including using lasers, studying refraction through thin lenses, applying concepts of matrix…

Pilotto, Rudy; Young, Jonathan O'Donnell – Performance Improvement, 1999
Describes the steps involved in a performance improvement program in the context of a large multinational corporation. Highlights include a training program for managers that explained performance improvement; performance matrices; divisionwide implementation, including strategic planning; organizationwide training of all personnel; and the…

Vann, John W.; Wessel, Roger D.; Spisak, Sheila A. – Journal of Career Development, 2000
Demonstrates use of a matrix weighing factors related to the attractiveness of a job and one's ability to perform it in order to evaluate potential job opportunities. Explains criteria for each factor and use of the matrix in career counseling. (SK)

Paci, A. M. – Electronic Library, 2001
Reports on a research project to build a new indexing technique, integrating experiences in database searching and indexing into a matrix model based on Internet use. Emphasizes the need for improving Web usability in specific domains and gives two examples from Italian Web sites, one for museums and one for health information. (Author/LRW)

Lynn, Richard; Irwing, Paul – Intelligence, 2004
A meta-analysis is presented of 57 studies of sex differences in general population samples on the Standard and Advanced Progressive Matrices (SPM and APM, respectively). Results showed that there is no difference among children aged 6-14 years, but that males obtain higher means from the age of 15 through to old age. Among adults, the male…

Peiter Horstmeier, Robin; Nall, Martha A. – Journal of Leadership Education, 2007
A purpose of youth organizations is to develop leadership skills among members through organizational structure and organization sponsored activities. But do they develop those skills? This national, multi-stage study examined the role of youth and the context of their activities in developing leadership in rural FFA chapters. FFA members had a…

Scott, Damon – PRIMUS, 2007
For over a decade it has been a common observation that a "fog" passes over the course in linear algebra once abstract vector spaces are presented. See [2, 3]. We show how this fog may be cleared by having the students translate "abstract" vector-space problems to isomorphic "concrete" settings, solve the "concrete" problem either by hand or with…

Mariano, Louis T.; Junker, Brian W. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2007
When constructed response test items are scored by more than one rater, the repeated ratings allow for the consideration of individual rater bias and variability in estimating student proficiency. Several hierarchical models based on item response theory have been introduced to model such effects. In this article, the authors demonstrate how these…

Good, Jennifer M.; Kochan, Frances – Online Submission, 2008
Strategic planning is complex (Dodd, 2004), and when managed well, it requires deliberate incorporation of evidenced-based data and the collaboration of key stakeholders. Thus, it is essential that the planning process includes the integration of data that are collected regularly and that both internal and external professional partners have the…
