Lafayette College is an undergraduate, private liberal arts and engineering school in Easton, Pennsylvania. In 2005, Lafayette rededicated its newly renovated library, complete with shared library/instructional technology facilities and a media studio. As originally envisioned, instructional technology (ITech) would have its own separate service desk within the library to circulate and service equipment. Microphones, FireWire drives, keyboards, cameras, cables, splitters, hubs, camcorders, tripods,and digital audio recorders were all part of the ITech multimedia mix. When the ITech service desk was finally opened, the library staff members faced a dilemma: What should they do when a student insisted on returning a valuable piece of equipment after hours? They were not trained with the procedures of the ITech service desk. The ITech service desk was open 72 hours a week while the library as a whole was open 104 hours a week. In this article, the author describes how the Lafayette College Library decided to merge its two service desks.
