Peer reviewedKrinsky, Richard; Krinsky, Suzanne G. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1994
Two experiments examined immediate and long-term serial list learning effects for common nouns for 42 fifth graders. Results provide additional evidence that long-term forgetting may be greater for learners who receive mnemonic instruction than for untrained controls, in spite of some immediate enhanced recall. (SLD)

Peer reviewedLee, David L.; Belfiore, Phillip J.; Toro-Zambrana, Wanda – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 2001
A study examined the effects of mastery training and explicit feedback on the selection behavior of two adults with severe mental retardation across two different vocational task designs. Selection behavior was affected by task efficiency only when efficiency was made more salient by pairing task cues with work incentives. (Contains references.)…

Gentile, J. Ronald – New Directions for Teaching and Learning, 2004
We are all accustomed to periodic summative testing for achievement, but in this chapter the importance of requiring mastery of fundamentals as the baseline for evaluation, regardless of the level of the class involved, is discussed.

Dickson, Sabra M. – American Biology Teacher, 2004
Student writing can provide opportunities for reflection on concept mastery for both students and teacher, and the creation of a biology portfolio by each student can allow a teacher to assess the level of understanding achieved by each individual as well as timely correction of conceptual errors. The use of portfolio is an assessment tool, which…

Barron, Kenneth E.; Harackiewicz, Judith M. – International Journal of Educational Research, 2003
In our previous work documenting benefits of both mastery and performance-approach goals, we assessed achievement goals for a particular type of student (specifically, the college student) in a particular type of classroom environment (specifically, the large introductory lecture). The current study sought to extend our initial work by testing…

Kyriakides, Leonidas – Educational Research and Evaluation, 2006
This paper is concerned with the importance of testing and developing integrated multilevel educational effectiveness models through comparative studies in educational effectiveness. It is argued that secondary analyses of international comparative studies could help researchers test and develop integrated multilevel educational effectiveness…

Fleming, Debra L. – College Teaching Methods & Styles Journal, 2008
The primary purpose of this exploratory study is to provide insight on how to use online discussions to foster collaborative learning and how to design assessment processes to evaluate the effectiveness of those discussions. This study focuses on the pedagogical role of discussion, effective practices in discussion, guidelines for creating…

Lacaille, Natalie; Koestner, Richard; Gaudreau, Patrick – International Journal of Music Education, 2007
Educational researchers have examined the effect of achievement goals on student performance, and suggest that both mastery goals and performance-approach goals are beneficial, whereas performance-avoidance goals are harmful. Recent research proposes that these results may not be generalized in the domain of music. The purpose of the present study…

Wang, Ming-Te – School Psychology Quarterly, 2009
The present study used an ecological framework to examine the relationships among adolescents' perceptions of school climate, social competence, and behavioral and psychological adjustment in the middle school years. This study improved upon prior studies by using "structural equation modeling" to investigate the hypothesized mediating…

Hartz, Sarah; Roussos, Louis – ETS Research Report Series, 2008
This paper presents the development of the fusion model skills diagnosis system (fusion model system), which can help integrate standardized testing into the learning process with both skills-level examinee parameters for modeling examinee skill mastery and skills-level item parameters, giving information about the diagnostic power of the test.…

Desmond, Cheryl T. – 1992
Findings of a study that investigated the meaning and assessment of student mastery in outcome-based education (OBE) and Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) classrooms are presented in this paper. Classroom observations were conducted during 1991-92 in a total of 12 10th-grade classrooms--of 4 teachers in an OBE school in Johnson City, New York,…

Koohang, Alex A.; Stepp, Sidney L. – 1984
It is argued that computer assisted instruction might be an answer to the scheduling problems resulting from the implementation of mastery learning programs in the public schools. The mastery learning model proposed by Carroll and the transformation of this model into a working model by Bloom are described. The difficulty of implementing mastery…
