Peer reviewedDowney, Ronald G.; Stockdale, Margaret S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
Lord's method for detecting subgroup bias at the item level uses a three-parameter item characteristic curve model. A chi square statistic is computed on the multivariate differences between the parameter estimates of item discrimination and difficulty. The LOGIST program and additional programs written in BASIC are used. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Item Analysis, Latent Trait Theory, Statistical Bias
Peer reviewedKrus, David J.; Lu, Mei-Yan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
The viability of the FORTRAN computer language and its relationship to other languages (such as PASCAL) were discussed. A library of C language and assembly language FORTRAN-callable subroutines, developed for the use of behavioral science researchers, was introduced. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Bias, Comparative Analysis, Computer Software, Programing Languages
Basch, Charles E.; And Others – Health Education Quarterly, 1988
Discusses the potential of computerized school-based record systems to help monitor the 1990 and future health objectives for the nation, to provide a continuing health database on nearly 50 million Americans, and to improve current school health recordkeeping practices. (JOW)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Elementary Secondary Education, Health, Public Schools
Ross, James – Executive Educator, 1988
Explains the use of computerized bookkeeping systems called spreadsheets to perform mathematical and accounting functions such as totaling expenditures, averaging test grades, and transferring funds. Advises about adapting spreadsheet programs and discusses several essential features, including linkage, macro functions, and sharing capabilities.…
Descriptors: Accounting, Bookkeeping, Computer Software, Efficiency
Turner, Judith Axler – Chronicle of Higher Education, 1987
Computer viruses are programs that propagate themselves from disk to disk and destroy programs or information files. Several universities have recently reported virus outbreaks. Some suggestions for avoiding the viruses are provided. (MLW)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Computers, Fraud, Guidelines
Olds, Henry F., Jr.; Dickenson, Anne – Classroom Computer Learning, 1985
Discusses the use of beginning, intermediate, and advanced databases for instructional purposes. A table listing seven databases with information on ease of use, smoothness of operation, data capacity, speed, source, and program features is included. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Software, Databases, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedStolurow, Lawrence M. – Computers and the Humanities, 1986
Reports the results of a comprehensive study to determine the needs and development opportunities for the use of microcomputers in foreign language instruction in elementary and secondary schools. Includes recommendations for software development, teacher training, curriculum development, and the role of the schools. (JDH)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Elementary Secondary Education, Microcomputers, Second Language Instruction
Peer reviewedRadcliff, Benjamin – Evaluation Review, 1986
This article evaluates three general types of computer-assisted approaches to multicriteria decision problems in which criteria are attributes as opposed to objectives. Several programs specifically designed for multiattribute problems, as well as spreadsheets and decision-free software, are discussed. (Author/BS)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Data Analysis, Decision Making, Microcomputers
Peer reviewedPascale, Pietro J.; Smith, Joseph – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
This paper presents a BASIC microcomputer program that constructs the Tukey (1977) stem and leaf graph. Options within the LEAF program include a modified stem and leaf where the stem is split and a parallel stem and leaf graph where two separate sets of data are displayed from a common stem. (Author)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Computer Software, Data Analysis, Input Output
Carlson, Kenneth W. – InCider, 1987
Using a computer gradebook can minimize time spent calculating grades. Nine software programs for grading are reviewed. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Elementary Secondary Education, Grading, Instruction
Bunson, Stanley – Media Management Journal, 1987
This description of ways in which database management systems can be helpful in instructional media centers explains the basic terminology involved and how to plan, create, modify, maintain, and use databases. Examples provided include an equipment distributions form and the structure for a film/video rental database. (LRW)
Descriptors: Audiovisual Centers, Computer Software, Database Management Systems, Databases
Mauriello, David – Science Software Quarterly, 1984
Reviews an interactive statistical analysis package (designed to run on 8- and 16-bit machines that utilize CP/M 80 and MS-DOS operating systems), considering its features and uses, documentation, operation, and performance. The package consists of 40 general purpose statistical procedures derived from the classic textbook "Statistical…

Peer reviewedMaddux, Cleborne D.; Cummings, Rhoda E. – Computers in the Schools, 1985
Following a brief history of Logo, BASIC, and Pilot programing languages, common educational programing tasks (input from keyboard, evaluation of keyboard input, and computation) are presented in each language to illustrate how each can be used to perform the same tasks and to demonstrate each language's strengths and weaknesses. (MBR)
