Brown, Tony – Mathematics in School, 1997
Addresses the way in which adults talk about the mathematical content of young children's activities and how the child's mathematical endeavors are dependent upon adult evaluations of them. Presents two examples for discussion: (1) sorting and counting by a two-year-old; and (2) a seven-year-old working with Dienes materials. (ASK)

Varelas, Maria – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Explores how third- and fourth-grade children (N=24) make sense of a scientific procedure introduced to them which they had used before in their own experimental inquires. Findings provide a picture of the complexity of understandings in this simple process. Contains 42 references. (DDR)

Hatano, Giyoo – New Directions for Child Development, 1997
Focuses on three main issues emerging from studies of conceptual development: (1) young children's naive theories of the world; (2) how innate constraints in conceptual development work; and (3) how innate and sociocultural constraints are integrated. Maintains that early development of core domains of thought (naive psychology, physics, and…

Korpan, Connie A.; Bisanz, Gay L.; Bisanz, Jeffrey; Henderson, John M. – Science Education, 1997
Examines the types of requests for information made by university students (N=60) as they evaluate scientific news briefs. Student requests most often focus on how research is conducted and why results might occur. Contains 47 references. (DDR)

Friedlander, Alex; Hershkowitz, Rina – Mathematics Teacher, 1997
Presents several examples of investigations which demonstrate the following: (1) algebra is connected to other mathematical topics; (2) algebra is an effective tool for representing patterns and relationships; and (3) algebra is an effective tool for analyzing patterns. (DDR)

Oller, John W., Jr. – CALICO Journal, 1996
Summarizes results from theory, research, and practice in technological assisted language instruction aiming toward an integrated theory of what will be available in this area in the 21st century. The study focuses on conceptualizing the use of advanced technologies in language instruction. (25 references) (Author/CK)

Sandberg, Elisabeth Hollister; And Others – Child Development, 1996
Two studies of development of spatial representation with two dimensions found that children as young as five years use the same two independent dimensions in fine-grained spatial coding of location in a circle as adults use--radius and angle. The adult pattern, where angle as well as radius is coded hierarchically, emerges by nine years. (HTH)

Marin-Arrese, Juana I. – Language Sciences, 1996
Contrasts the use of metaphors for death and dying in English and Spanish and makes some observations concerning universal and culture-specific conceptualizations. The article points out that the human capacity to conceptualize and reason derives from experience (perceptions, cultural practices, motor activity) and imagination (metaphor, metonymy,…

Fuson, Karen C.; And Others – Cognition and Instruction, 1996
Analyzed conceptual and linguistic complexities of matching situation word problems. Found a four-level progression in conceptualizing and solving these problems: Relational ("who had more/less" but not "how much more/less"); Language Cue (equalizing or compare language); Understand Matching Situations (difference between two…

Nason, Rod; And Others – Research in Science Education, 1996
Reports on a study in which a teacher used the collaborative development of a format-free computer database to facilitate the construction of knowledge by a group of students (n=3) during a science project. Results indicate that knowledge construction is enhanced when children collaboratively develop a format-free database. Contains 27 references.…

Watanabe, Tad – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1995
Investigated relationships between children's fraction concepts and whole number concepts. Four second graders were interviewed four times each over a seven-week period. Findings suggested that the schemes to coordinate units were closely related to how the children understood fractions. (Author/CMS)
