Polk, Cindy L. Howes; Goldstein, David – Journal of Psychology, 1980
Indicated that early readers are more likely to be advanced in cognitive development than are nonearly-reading peers. After one year of formal reading instruction, early readers maintained their advantage in reading achievement. Measures of concrete operations were found to predict reading achievement for early and nonearly readers. (Author/DB)

Children identified for specific reading retardation were tested at initial contact and after two years on a variety of measures including seat activity, and cognitive and motor steadiness tasks. The thought processes of 507 elementary, secondary, and university students engaged in problem-solving situations are examined in this study. Results indicated that pupils who got correct answers often showed incorrect reasoning justifications. No significant sex differences were indicated. (MP)
