Peer reviewedFisher, Kathleen M.; Lipson, Joseph Isaac – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Discusses the value of studying errors made by students in the process of learning science. Addresses 20 research questions dealing with student learning errors. Attempts to characterize errors made by students and clarify some terms used in error research. (TW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Educational Strategies
Peer reviewedMoran, Thomas P., Ed.; And Others – Human-Computer Interaction, 1985
Individual papers discussing various facets of human relationships with interactive computer systems present an analysis of direct manipulation interfaces; discuss notion of conceptual models shared by system and user and propose a design methodology for delivering models to users; and address the intelligibility of systems and importance of…

Canelos, James; And Others – Journal of Visual/Verbal Languaging, 1986
Describes the third in a series of studies investigating effects of psychological variable of encoding specificity on cognitive learning, test design, and visualization during instruction and testing. Randhawa, Bikkar S.; And Others – Journal of Visual/Verbal Languaging, 1982
Replications of two basic experiments in support of the dual-coding processing model with grade 10 and college subjects used pictures, concrete words, and abstract words as stimuli presented at fast and slow rates for immediate and sequential recall. Results seem to be consistent with predictions of simultaneous-successive cognitive theory. (MBR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Educational Theories, Grade 10, Higher Education
Peer reviewedStrawitz, Barbara M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Long-term retention effects of two methods of instruction used one year earlier to teach field-dependent and field-independent sixth-grade students to control variables and to transfer this ability to novel tasks were investigated. Also examined whether or not uninstructed seventh-grade students had acquired this ability on their own. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Elementary School Science, Field Dependence Independence, Intermediate Grades
Clark, Richard E. – Journal of Instructional Development, 1984
Reviews cognitive research related to computer-based instruction in the areas of motivation; the relationship between computer-assisted instruction and learning; learner control; transfer of learning; hemispheric dominance; and anxiety. Design professionals are urged to consider congitive views. (MBR)
Descriptors: Achievement Gains, Anxiety, Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Cerebral Dominance
Gagne, Robert M. – Journal of Instructional Development, 1986
Reflects upon opportunities for research in instructional technology provided by present state of media hardware technology and educational requirements. Prospects for research in incidental learning, including learning from television, are discussed, as well as traditional learning research on intentional learning, including possibilities for…

Peer reviewedManning, Brenda H. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Presents a theoretical and research foundation for teaching self-communication and metacognition to improve problem-solving skills, memory, and performance. Five steps are provided to guide teachers in implementing a self-communication strategy which can be used in a mathematics class. An extended reference list is included. (JM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Communication (Thought Transfer), Communication Skills, Elementary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedBenbow, Camilla Persson; And Others – Intelligence, 1983
Students of high intellectual ability and their parents were tested on a battery of cognitive tests. Vernon's model of intelligence best fit results. A verbal-educational and a practical-spatial-mechanical factor explained most performance variance. Among children, age related to verbal but not spatial or mechanical abilities. (Author/RD)

Shaffer, David Williamson; Clinton, Katherine A. – Wisconsin Center for Education Research (NJ1), 2005
In this paper, we argue that new computational tools problematize the concept of thought within current sociocultural theories of technology and cognition, by challenging the traditional position of privilege that humans occupy in sociocultural analyses. We draw on work by Shaffer, Kaput, and Latour to extend the analytical reach of activity…
