Hayes, Brett K.; Taplin, John E. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1993
Children (ages 9 and 14) with mild mental retardation and matched controls without mental retardation were given a test of their ability to perceive relations among different stimuli and transfer learned behavior from familiar to less familiar environments. Results showed that subjects with retardation relied only on prototype information, whereas…

Gorsky, Paul; Finegold, Menahem – Instructional Science, 1994
Describes a study of high school students that investigated students' responses to an anomaly generated by the juxtaposition of opposing explanatory frameworks and examined the nature and impact of cognitive conflict as students moved from prescientific to scientific explanatory frameworks concerning the concept of force. (19 references)…

Jones, Graham A.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1994
Describes the development, refinement, and validation of a framework for nurturing and assessing multidigit number sense in young children. Major constructs incorporated were counting, partitioning, grouping, and number relationships. The framework was validated through case studies of six first-grade children. (30 references) (MKR)

Sockett, Hugh – Cambridge Journal of Education, 1989
Examines criteria for a moral epistemology of practice in teaching. Requirements include a view of meaning and truth; a comprehensive scope; a flexible view of rationality; morality; a common language of description, explanation, and justification; and sensitivity to objectivity. The moral issues of care, courage, and deceit are discussed. (SM)

Carey, Deborah A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1991
A study asked 24 first grade children from 3 different classes to write number sentences and select appropriate alternative number sentences for addition and subtraction word problems. Results indicated that children could be characterized into five clusters according to their flexibility in accepting alternative number sentences and that…

Howard, Arthur C. – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Discussed is why students have the tendency to apply an "add the numerators and add the denominators" approach to adding fractions. Suggested is providing examples exemplifying this intuitive approach from ratio, concentration, and distance problems to demonstrate under what conditions it is applicable in contrast to the addition algorithm. Linn, Marcia C.; Songer, Nancy Butler – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
When comparing performances across four versions of Computer as Lab Partner curriculum, increases in understanding were found when students predicted outcomes and reconciled results, and students used a heat-flow model of thermodynamics to integrate their experimental results. Argued is that curriculum must explicitly motivate students to…

Prybutok, Victor R.; And Others – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1991
Described are examples of classroom exercises that use interactive graphics software for personal computers to enhance the teaching of statistical concepts by allowing students to generate multiple examples, make conjectures, and verify their findings about the concept. The transfer of this interactive tool to other subject areas is suggested.…

Moreno A., Luis E.; Waldegg, Guillermina – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1991
Analyzed are the different stages in the conceptual evolution of infinity as developed historically through the work of Bolzano and Cantor. Results of a study of 18 to 20 year old's concept of infinity prior to instruction produced aspects of the passage between conceptual levels of infinity. (MDH)

Ranzijn, Frederik J. A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1991
The number of video examples of a concept and the dispersion of the examples were studied as variables affecting concept learning by 50 Dutch 12-year-old and 14-year-old secondary students. Although the number had no effect, broadly dispersed examples improved posttest classification ability. Implications for concept teaching are discussed. (SLD)

Campbell, Patricia F., Ed. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1993
Proposes helping students understand fractions by establishing connections between students' informal knowledge of fractions and the mathematical symbols used to represent fractions. Sample dialogues demonstrate how these connections can be made. (MDH)

Jegede, Olugbemiro J.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
This study sought to find out whether concept mapping reduces anxiety and thereby enhances achievement in biology. A total of 51 grade-10 students participated in the experiment. Findings indicate concept mapping is significantly more effective than traditional teaching in enhancing learning in biology and reducing student anxiety toward biology.…

Stavy, Ruth – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
This study (n=192) examined the use of analogical instruction to overcome misconceptions about conservation of matter. Students who understood the concept conservation of matter when iodine was evaporated were able to transfer their understanding to the evaporation of acetone. This indicates that teaching by analogy can be an effective tool in…

Muthukrishna, Nithi; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
Reports a study (n=41) of the effectiveness of in-depth, conceptually integrated instruction delivered via a videodisc program in eliminating children's alternative frameworks in science. This curriculum, which did not directly address alternative frameworks during instruction, changed 92% of the alternative frameworks held by students to…
